The beer uses our best-selling Finest Kind IPA as template, but a few key changes make this beer quite different. 1) We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma. 2) We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability. 3) We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind. You know what that means, big aroma in your olfactory. See you Thursday, and yes, we will be pouring samples so you can try before you buy. Cheers! Draft at Capone’s, as a sample, then a pint. Pours turbid golden with white head and well-retained and copious lace. Nose is rye malty, with resiny hops, fruit. Tastes of rye malt and resiny hops up front, some mid-palate fruit and funky Simcoey notes, and an overall complex flavor and finish with a complex mouthfeel.

Draft @ Coalhouse Pizza, Stamford, CT. I’ve been seeing a lot of rye IPAs lately, and it’s an experiment that requires careful mixing. Unfortunately, this brew provides a slightly acidic aftertaste that prevents this from being a real enjoyable beer.

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange. Leave behind great lacing and a thin cap of white atop.

Aroma: An even steven nose full of pine and citrus essence, peach.

Taste: Peach, light toffee, a little citrus tartness with a earthy bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Everything I look for in an IPA is in this beer. Well done. It wasn’t what I expected at all based on my many encounters with Rye IPAs over the years. While had some Rye spiciness, the hops were the start of this show.

On tap at the British Beer Company. Pours a deep amber color with a smallish off white head that displays moderate retention. Smells of spicy rye and resinous hops mostly. Bits of bread and caramel malt peak through to provide a hint of balance. The flavor is heavier on the malt than the aroma suggested. Bready honey like malt sweetness balanced nicely with the spice of the rye and a mildly aggressive pine and resin. Lingering spice and resin left on the palette long after each sip. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous mouthfeel. Very nice beer, I really enjoyed it, I wish I would have schlepped over to the brewery when they were selling bottles.
