COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else I’ve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I can’t drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also don’t want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Clear dark ruby/brown color with big beige head. Aroma has caramel, roasted malts, resin, earth and citrus. Taste has lots of citrus, with caramel, toffee, toasted malts, brown sugar, chocolate, pine with a great bittersweet finish.

Cerveza de color marrón con una buena espuma de color beige, denso y perdurable. El aroma es levemente tostado y con bastante lúpulo, caramelo y cítricos. El sabor es amargo y cítrico en todo con caramelo con un final prolongado y amargo. Buena cerveza.

Bottle, 12oz. As Smuttynose Durty Mud Season, An almost clear one, brown in color and with a small, beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted and quite hoppy. Caramel, pine cones and orange zest. It’s full-bodied, soft and with a nice carbonation, quite dry. Roasted malts and some coffee blends nicely with the citrusy, piney and bitter hops. Lasting finish. A quite nice one, easy drinkable, lovely hoppy and tasteful all the way. 150611

On tap at Hopcat. Wow. Very curious stuff taste dirty but also bitter with some caramel. Like you dropped a piece of caramel in a mud puddle and then stuck it in your mouth. Interesting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from the bottle of a six pack, nice brown look this about a finger of white head. I’m always looking for a good brown ale and this one is among the best I’ve tried. Adding hops to the brown ale which is usually malty makes a really good drinking experience, and 8.4% is substantial. The commercial description speaks of how everyone and their grand dad is making an IPA these days, more should do it in the way of brown ale, this is well done, delicious, and strong.

Nice crisp brown coloured body that is slightly clear at the bottom, with a two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pungent resinous hops, pine, alcohol, roasted malt, belgian yeast and somehow even more deeply pungent hops. Medium-bodied; Deep roasted malt flavour with some nuts and earth noticeable, all with a lot of hops overhead and a good pine and grapefruit flavour. Aftertaste shows a good balance of roasted malts coupled with some bright hops and a pleasant sweet and deep coffee flavour at the finish. Overall, a nicely layered and complex beer for the style with a lot of hops (pungent, too) with a good and robust malt profile. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 17-May-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 30-May-2015.

Pours hazy brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, chocolate, caramel, cocoa citrus and grass. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long malty, caramel, chocolate, cocoa and bitter finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

I’ve never smelled a beer that smelled "dead on" like Tide laundry detergent. No kidding. If I was blind folded and asked to identify which was the beer and which was the laundry detergent by smell, it would be a toss up. Smuttynose makes some of my favorite beers, this just isn’t one of them. Probably some of you out there will enjoy this. Just my opinion.
