Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Thereís no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; itís pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weíve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnít too different from Old Brown Dog, but itís a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else Iíve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I canít drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also donít want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Aroma is down to the earthier spectrum of pine, malts and light hops. Taste is also from the darker spectra and notes of malt, earth, a little sweetness together with a mature hoppy sensation. You feel like an old farmer relaxing after a hard days work out in the fields when drinking this. ABV is pretty high and is noticeable, but not disturbing. Well, I guess this is how itís done? Smuttynose knows their stuff, even if this isnít my favorite style.

Pours a dark brown with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of pine, hops, and some caramel. Caramel and milk chocolate undertones with a burst of citrus, pine, and hop bitterness. Nice beer.

Bottle. Durty indeed. Muddy, rusty brown with a big junkyard pile of foam on top. The aroma, flavor and texture of this all deliver just as the title would suggest ... thereís the citric hoppiness of an American ale, just riding the wavecrest of a at-its-core toffee-based, caramel brown ale. Bottle @ home. Amazingly creamy and compact medium sized beige head. Long lasting and with nice lacing. Brown color with some yeast particles. Hoppy, fruity and resinous aroma of oranges, pineapple & pine needles, nuts, toffee, milk chocolate. Medium bodied. Taste is bitter up front and then finishes with plenty of sharp orange-peel-like + coffee-roasted bitterness. It Taste of pineapple, toffee, orange peel, nuts, earth, dark bread and dark chocolate. But most flavors are overshadowed very soon by the assertive bitterness.

As Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale at Oliver Twist Stockholm, april 19th 2014. Unclear brown body with a nice big beige head. Aroma of toffee, roast, burned malt. Taste of burned malt and chocolate, quite pleasant, with dark fruit and a light roasty finish. Hoppy bitterness, roasted chocolate aftertaste. Good complexity, a well crafted beer.†

bottle - Pours dark brown and has an aroma of resinous hops and caramel malt. It tastes similar with plenty of bitterness and a tasty toasted caramel malt body. Bitterness lingers. Pretty good.
