Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Thereís no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; itís pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weíve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnít too different from Old Brown Dog, but itís a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else Iíve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I canít drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also donít want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Lots and lots of candied hops. Like caramel hops. It's weird. Don't know that I've ever had anything like this before. I like it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

4/04/2015 (draught at The Littlefield in Cincinnati) and 5/14/2015 (bottle): Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale... Aroma is caramelized malt, brown sugar, tea, and some hard candy orange citrus with a touch of resin. Hazy brunette color with a thick and frothy beige-colored head thatís lasting. Malty and rich, but not too much. The hops come through right away and are crisp in the middle along with some tea, leather, cedar, and root beer . Thereís a good dose of earthy, citrus, and herbal/resin hop flavor and bitterness in the dry, caramel finish (thereís a touch of nutty coffee as the beer warms as well). Medium-full body, smooth, good mouthfeel. Iíve had this on tap and then found a 6-pack. On tap, this beer is more malty and sweet whereas more of the hops comes through from the bottled version. Although they seem a bit different between the formats, I definitely like them both quite a bit. Quite complex and gets even better as it warms. This is a really good hoppy brown ale.

Pours a cloudy mahogany with a dark tan head. Aroma of maple syrup malt and slight note of pine hops. Taste is very malty with a bit of toasted notes mixing with hops for a subtle but noticeable bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Smuttynose Short Batch #18 Durty) Bottle 355 ml at home, as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale. Served into a teku glass, ABV 8.4% Brown coloured body with a tall and thick beige head sittig on top. Very good retention, it leaves medium lacing on the glass after it has collapsed. Nice aroma with toffee, light coffee, alcohol, vanilla. Taste follows, light alcohol, vanilla, light coffee, some chocolate, hops, mildly bitter with a long aftertaste. Medium body, good carbonation. Very nice, I didnít expect it to be that good,

12 oz poured into a New Belgium chalice. Dark brown with a slight reddish hue. Good sized tan head that quickly dissipated. Nice nose of chocolate malt and grapefruit, complex. Taste is balanced, has that cola like feel. Medium bodied with a bit of a creamy texture, good stuff.

12oz bottle pours with a mahogany colored body that supports a thin tan head. The modest aroma offers up earthy tea, some chocolate, a bit of roasted malts and then faint somewhat vague hoppiness. The taste starts with chocolate malts and a sliver of fruity citrus and then it picks up earthy tea hops that quickly climb into resiny pine like hop bitterness. Roasted malts move forward toward the finish. This is working well.

Deep brown with garnet hues. Nose is light piney hops, brown sugar, molasses, toasted malt, cola, and faint roast. Flavor is light sweet pine, cocoa, mild brown sugar, and a dry, nutty roast finish. Lingering dry roast/coffee.
