Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Thereís no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; itís pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weíve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnít too different from Old Brown Dog, but itís a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else Iíve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I canít drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also donít want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

bottle. Poured deep brown with a rocky tan head. Aroma of roasted malt packed with hops. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel with a tart resiny finish. Flavour of caramel malt, nutty with big herbal hops throughout. Never would have the high alcohol content.

Growler gifted from my neighbor who didnít like coffee beers. While not a coffee beer per se, but it was was certainly a flavor note. Resinous hoppy, nutty, earthy, cocoa and coffee.

Pretty hoppy with nuttiness bordering on roasted malt. After a few sips this just feels more like a Black IPA, of which Iím not a fan. Just donít typically like the roasty malt with high dosage of bright hops. Itís like brushing your teeth and drinking a glass of orange juice....Just not a good combination.

Translucent dark brown, thick foamy head. nose is grapefruit, with malt in a head lock. Bitter. Middle is nuts, maple, malt, with some coco rolling around in there. Finish is bitter and long. Tasty.

12oz into a giant stemmed Hennipin glass. Pours a charcoal durty brown. Massive caramel brown head, about an inch, decent lacing, great looking. Hoppy brown aroma, sold. Pine, malts, hops, brown rice, hay, salt, black tea fill out the full approach to the nose. Taste of hoppy decadence mixed in a brown ale, excellence. Punchy and profound hops impact the brown malt status and meld perfectly. Its like a half and half left on the pallate of two distinct brews mixed together. In left enjoying the hops bouncing on the malt profile of the brown. Abv wise this is an undectable knockout, wow 8.4 is there, evident in the aftertaste, but calls no notion for finger pointing until you realize whatís going on. Another star from smutty.
