Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Thereís no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; itís pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weíve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnít too different from Old Brown Dog, but itís a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else Iíve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I canít drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also donít want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Draft at Beer Temple. Pours hazy brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, fruity hops and overripe dark fruits. Flavour is light heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Over medium bodied with a fairly thick mouthfeel and soft carbonation.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of foamy with a frothy top light brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque except at the edges black brown colored body and a spiderweb lacing. The mild aroma was medicinal musty and mild vinous. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering vinous aftertaste. The tasty flavor contained notes of pumpkin vinous burnt malt and dark malt. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.

Dark chestnut color with thin frothy head. Deep nutty aroma. Sweet brown ale nuttiness with some toasted caramel malt. This one strikes me more as a hoppy brown ale than a black IPA...and I like it that way. Some pine hoppiness gives a nice balance to the malty/nutty sweetness. Rich mouthfeel, coating but not cloying. I like this one.

Pours a dark brown mahogany color, with a thick frothy tan head. Aroma is maple syrup, malt, and a slight note of pine hops. Taste is very malty with a nutty cherry wood flavor coming through. Sticky syrup like feel. Slight hop presence. Very well balanced. Good easy drinking beer.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2015 An awesome amalgam of dry spicy IPA and malty barley wine flavors. Malty but not caramelly, this one is far more earthy, like an amped up brown ale with an aggressive dose of English high alpha hops. Very nutty finish. This redhead leaves her sticky lace draped cross the glass and has a long sassy hop spice fade.

From bottle. Pours dark reddish brown with big foamy beige head. Medium bodied. Very sweet aroma with hints of raisins, liquorice, toffee. Strong alcohol taste, a bit sweet but mostly bitter. First impression was very good, mostly because of the strong aroma

Bottle camping in France. Brown pour, thin off-white head. Aroma of nuts, toffee, fruits, some spices and a bit of bread. Flavor is quite bitter fruity hops and nice thick nutty malts. Great balance, unique brew.
