Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Thereís no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; itís pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weíve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnít too different from Old Brown Dog, but itís a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else Iíve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I canít drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also donít want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with off white head. Roasty, malty, herbal, slight cocoa aromas. Roasty, cocoa, bitter, grassy earthy flavors.

Bottle from Brewtopia, highly recommended by the dude there. Dark bown with lasting head and lace. Spicy leafy caky caramel brown sugar aroma. Robustly roasted caramel brown sugar maple syrup nuts and subdued fruit with assertive woody bitterness and light citrus covered in toasted caramel. Pretty high carbo accentuates the hops. Why is this so much fucking better than the similar though weaker Sixpoint Beast Mode that I jut poured down the drain. Richness! I think thatís it. Or maybe flavor!

Free :) taster at the source. Pours dark amber with a beige head. Aroma is caramel and pine. Flavor is caramel, molasses, leading to a pine bitterness in the finish.

12 ounce bottle - Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Best By: 06/30/15.

Appearance: Pours out a very dark reddish-brown body with a finger of beige-tinted foam. Good lacing on the descent.

Smell: Durty Mud leans forward with floral, citrusy, juicy hop notes atop the toasty (and additionally lightly roasty) maltiness with its hints of caramel and stale coffee grinds.

Taste: Toasty, roasty malts with touches of coffee and cocoa powder. Modestly sweet with a low, light hint of caramel. Slightly citric, fruity hops tasting of grapefruit and tangerine rind. Also a bit floral, a bit resiny. Moderate bitterness. A dry maltiness on the finish with lingering citric qualities and bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: It does a mighty fine job at being a hopped up brown.

Pours real nice cola color with fluffy tan head. Real strong pine in nose. Taste mixes in the pine with thick caramel and biscuit. Pretty oily in the mouth with a drying finish. There is something earthy and dirty about this.

Pours brown, with lasting tan foam. Decent lacing. Aroma is dominated by heavy pine, very nice. Taste is initially wonderful - nice hop/malt balance, but finish is a bit dry and tart.

Dark mahogany pour from a 12 oz. Bottle. Khaki head dissipates quickly, but lacing remains. Nutty aroma with woody and clay notes. Bread taste at first evolves into smoky taste, a brief caramel pop and finally a long dry bitterness. Slight alcohol burn that gets a bit more noticeable as the beer warms. A fine late winter offering!

Comes out of tap translucent dark mahogany with a nice light tan head. Sharp, hoppy aroma has earthy, caramel, and toasted malt notes. Flavor has hoppy, grassy, earthy, woody and caramel tones for a distinctive chord of tastes. Texture is smooth, fairly firm, not so fizzy. Get down and Durty!

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Chesapeake, VA. Dark brown pour with a short khaki head. Aroma of caramel and grapefruit. Taste offers bold and bitter tangerine and grapefruit rind with bold and bitter chocolate and coffee. Bitterness lingers on the palate but is not unpleasant. This is not that different from a black IPA and the end result is pretty spectacular.
