Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else I’ve tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I can’t drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also don’t want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Nutty robust malt herb coffee citrus fruit smell. Nice dark shady brown color. Taste is out of bounds. Nice nutty malty taste up front with crazy citrus fruit hop flavor and bitterness on the second half. Full body on the palate. Just the right amount of carbonation. This beer what ever you classafie this one as is a game changer. Way to revelutionalize the industry.

355ml bottle. Clear, dark hazelnut colour with ruby red glimmer and late awakening, huge, thick, creamy, mostly to fully lasting, superbly lacing, beige head, building ’latte macchiato’ layers like strata appropriate to ecstasize every geologist. Malty aroma is rich in nutty and toffee notes, hoppy overtones span a broad area from fruity orange to herbal mint. Taste is minimally sweet nuttily malty, toffee notes, a touch of caramel, butter, nougat and cocoa, hoppy counterweight serves up orange, orange zest, mint - flavours fully compatible with the malt body, whereas the bitterness is not. Not that far from a Barleywine...

A brown IPA, eh? Interesting idea, Smuttynose. It does a pretty good job of delivering on that promise, with a good amount of roasted malt flavor and a strong (but not overpowering) hop taste. It could be a little more intense, especially at 8.4% ABV, but I still look forward to it every year.

Rated on 9-13-2015. This bottled beer, best by 06/17/15, forms a small beige head with a lengthy retention, copper transparent body, lively, fast rising carbonation observed, and a fair amount of lacing. This beer’s aroma is roasted malt, light hops and some chocolate. The flavor is semi-sweet, roasted malt and chocolate. This beer is light-medium bodied. A quaffable easy drinking beer that has a light roasted aftertaste.

Pours a very cloudy and very dark brown color that’s almost black with a 2.5 finger frothy beige head. Great retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap. Chunks of soapy lacing left behind. Surprisingly hop forward aoma with grassy resins and hop oils. Floral with pine needle, grass and spruce tips. This aggressive hop presence overpowers the brown ale notes a bit too much but there is some caramel malt sweetness along with hints of chocolate and subtle roast underneath. On the lighter end of medium bodied and tastes very similar to the aroma. Very hop forward with resinous hop bitterness dominating the flavor. Dry and floral with grassy hop and sticky pine needle flavor lingering over a slightly roasted malt backbone into a dry finish. Hop profile is kind of one dimensional and the malts are impossible to pick up until it warms up considerably. After a while there is subtle toffee, caramel and chocolate malt sweetness along with burnt toast and coffee bean.
