COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

Otroligt smakrik, mörk färg. Ganska söt och relativt besk. Hmm, en öl som är intensiv upplevelse. För dig som vill ha lite mer.

Bottle. Durty indeed. Muddy, rusty brown with a big junkyard pile of foam on top. The aroma, flavor and texture of this all deliver just as the title would suggest ... there’s the citric hoppiness of an American ale, just riding the wavecrest of a at-its-core toffee-based, caramel brown ale. Bottle @ home. Amazingly creamy and compact medium sized beige head. Long lasting and with nice lacing. Brown color with some yeast particles. Hoppy, fruity and resinous aroma of oranges, pineapple & pine needles, nuts, toffee, milk chocolate. Medium bodied. Taste is bitter up front and then finishes with plenty of sharp orange-peel-like + coffee-roasted bitterness. It Taste of pineapple, toffee, orange peel, nuts, earth, dark bread and dark chocolate. But most flavors are overshadowed very soon by the assertive bitterness.

As Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale at Oliver Twist Stockholm, april 19th 2014. Unclear brown body with a nice big beige head. Aroma of toffee, roast, burned malt. Taste of burned malt and chocolate, quite pleasant, with dark fruit and a light roasty finish. Hoppy bitterness, roasted chocolate aftertaste. Good complexity, a well crafted beer.

bottle - Pours dark brown and has an aroma of resinous hops and caramel malt. It tastes similar with plenty of bitterness and a tasty toasted caramel malt body. Bitterness lingers. Pretty good.

Bottle. Clear brown amber beer with a large beige head. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, citrus, herbs, nuts and pine needles. Flavor is spicy with notes of caramel, citrus, nuts and herbs. Great balance.

Bottle. Moderate to heavy cereal, toasted and milk chocolate for the malt, moderate herbs for the hops, dough and mushrooms for the yeast, with wood and toffee in the background. Head is average to large, frothy/creamy turning rocky, beige, with excellent crusty and thick lacing and is fully lasting. Color is slightly hazy and sparkling dark brown. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic, and heavily bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, creamy, with a lively carbonation and a lightly astringent finish. Starts off like an average tasting Brown Ale, but the bitter finish puts this American Strong Ale in a class by itself.

Decent fruity aroma. Fruity taste with still some light alcohol in it. Good bitterness that sits down in front of the mouth for a long time. There’s something about this beer that makes me disappointed. Not quite sure what. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Brown color 2 finger head. Head hangs around. Lacing. Taste is soft with a far roastyness with a hoppy finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
