COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Thereís no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; itís pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weíve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnít too different from Old Brown Dog, but itís a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

1/26/14. 12oz bottle from Market Square. Brown pour with a frothy tan head. Dank citrus hop aroma, plenty of roasted malt. Dank citrus flavor, a bit of seltzer water, biscuit, caramel, chocolate, and lingering coffee. Not bad.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body under a one finger frothy beige head that had pretty nice retention. The nose is pretty nice, plenty of nutty maltiness with a bit of chocolate and some nice bright hoppiness. The flavor isnít the best for me, the malt is a bit too dusty and husky up front, just a little sweetness, and a light coffee flavor towards the back end. Plenty of citrus hops in here, but it doesnít really work all that well in a Brown Ale for me. The nutty notes donít really blend too well with the fairly aggressive bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fizzy soft carbonation. Meh, this one just doesnít do it for me, I think Iíll take my Brown Ales and IPAs in separate glasses please.

Not a huge fan of aba to begin with. Looks great tho. Different choice of hops might go a long way in keeping the mellow aspect of the more traditional version. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(bottle - 12 oz) Under Durty Mud Season label. Copper pour with a thick tan head. Light and mild hop and nutty malt aroma. Very subtle though. Slightly hoppy at the start of the flavor with a malty, cocoa and nutty combination in the middle. Hops linger on for a bit and leave a slightly dry aftertaste. Alcohol is well hidden.

Bottle. Pours a moderate brown color (go figure) with a big off white head. Aroma is of grassy/citrus/lightly floral hops, caramel and some nutty notes. Taste is a solid does of pine/citrus and floral hops, light caramel, toast and some grassy notes get in there with some mild milk chocolate, nuts and mild sweetness before finishing rather bitter. Decent brown.

Bottle at home. Pours clear brown with a medium, frothy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is toast, cookie and nutty malt with earthy and spicy hops, light citrus notes and dates. Flavor is moderate hops and bitterness with supporting cookie malt and dates with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Aroma is malts, spices and light citrus/pine. The flavor is grapefruit, tropical fruit, hop resin, malts and a long and very bitter finish. Getting the impression if you want a strongly bitter IPA/IPA variant, Smuttynose is among the best.

Surprisingly good because I didnít really know what I was ordering - it was too busy to ask what the name is but I saw íDurtyí on the tap. Pours brown with good head and lacing. Citrus hops, caramelized and lightly roasted malt. Medium bitter finish with some sweetness. Tap at Blackjack.

12 oz bottle pours a brown color with a small off white head. Aromas of roasted malt, citrus, pine. Medium bodied with a bittersweet finish, interesting beer.

On tap: The aroma consists of moderate caramel, grapefruit, and a touch of toffee. It pours a orangish-brown that is mostly transparent when held to the light. It has a one finger get beige head that leaves behind a lot of sticky laced rings on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate caramel, light brown sugar, and a touch of toffee. The finish has moderate-heavy grapefruit and lighter pine. Itís medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Overall, it tastes like a hopped up Barley Wine.

Bottle. Assertive hoppy brown, so the label doesn't mislead. Medium body, tall foamy head, balanced finish. Quite good.
