2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
20th February 2014
Fare thee well Josh tasting at Bruceís. Thanks to Leighton. Murky gold beer, pinky cream coloured head. Palate is airy and dry. Dry minerals and dry yeast. Little rhubarb and a little lactose. Somewhat insipid strawberry. Dry finish. Meh!

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared in London for my farewell drinks. Cheers to Leighton. Pours murky orange with a small beige cap. Nose is hugely floral and tarty with some light berries and heavy yeast. Taste is tangy, very floral - like lavender, orange juice and more tangy berries. Odd, doesnít balance well. Just ok

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared at Joshís Farewell Hoorah - thanks to Leigton, 20/02/14.
Murky light orange holding reddish hues and topped with moderate off white spotting.
Nose us big on plastic and permanent marker, not great here, strawberry shortcake and rhubarb crumble just peeping through, earthy tones.
Taste comprises strawberry chews, lightly tartened strawberry, strawberry wins out over rhubarb in the flavour fight, straw, light spice, very subtle acidic tones - just evident.
Light body, fine carbonation with a little prickle, semi drying close.
Ok Berliner but far from top draw - the nose killed it really!

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours murky golden - brownish with a medium white head. The nose is plastic, permanent marker, terpene, barnyard, dirt, Rhubarb and cat litter. The taste is wheat, strawberry, soft red fruit, mild sourness, faint sherbet, stewed rhubarb with a grainy finish. Lightish body and fine, prickly carbonation. Very odd indeed and particularly enjoyable.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared in London to celebrate Joshís final days. Pours soupy, light gold with a creamy, white head. The nose has lots of dirty rhubarb, mild sweat. Light sweet flavor with shortcake, a bit of strawberries and cream, mild strawberry seed bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Mild sweetness to finish with ripe strawberries and cream, minimal tartness, white bread. Pretty basic.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
murky tangerine pour, thin white ring. Muted wheat and rhubarb nose, straightforward and singular but without flaws. Flavor is more rhubarb at front, lightly sweet but balanced. Mid shows huge plastic, disrupting before the stale papery fruit sweetness finish, sticky and full with decently long finish. Off notes ruined flavor, otherwise singular and solid.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at GABF. Pours a cloudy orange/russet color with small head. The nose is light plastic that Iíve become accustomed to in beers with strawberry, strawberry seed, slight lacto, some candied lemon peel. The palate is fuller than a typical Berliner, but not sticky, with flavors of unripe strawberry, lemon, sour yeast, and drying acidity.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle #5 from the man, Lukaduke. Itís a fairly enjoyable strawberry weisse with a touch of tart. That said, the melted plastic character is real. Once you identify it, itís hard to ignore.

2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
On tap at Willibrew: Pours a pink / orange sludge color which reminded me of McNugget slurry, not a very appealing color. Bad start. Aroma is strange, there is a lot of strawberry and tart, but something not quite right. Taste is, at first, with extreme amounts of melted plastic, resin, vulcanized rubber, diesel fuel. Itís disgusting and makes me question whether I should be consuming something that tastes like this. The aftertaste, however, isnít too bad. Slightly tart, heavy on strawberry, and a bit wheaty. The strawberry dominates everything, but after experiencing the plastic taste, itís more than welcome. Itís not too sweet which is a plus. Fairly light-bodied and low carbonation. I can imagine melting and consuming a strawberry-flavored condom would be pretty similar. This is a bad beer.

4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The beer pours a cloudy, pinkish yellow with a very deep, opaque murk and medium sized head of soft white bubbles that slowly filter away to a scrim. The strawberries in the beer seem to give it a bit more viscosity than the traditional Berliner Weisse. On the nose, the beer smells of plastic with strong twinges of strawberry jam and chalk. The plastic is fresh and strays towards paint-like scents as you throw your nose into it. Light citric acidity can also be sensed on the nose. The strawberry, when it shines through is delicious and fresh, but the plastic scents get in the way. On the tongue, the beer tastes softly tart with strong fruit-sweetness and a sweet wheat flake finish. The sweetness is kept nicely in line by the citric acidity. Bitterness is little to nonexistent. In flavor, the beer begins with tart lactic lemon, chalk, and a touch of the plastic from the scent. This plastic, however, quickly morphs into unripe strawberries, then fresh picked strawberries, and then strawberry jam with a strong wheat flake flavor in the finish. Light lemon does stick with the flavor, as well as a touch of orange juice, giving this beer a delicious, citrus-fruit juice feel to it. The strawberry on the finish lasts beautifully on the tongue and even lingers in the aftertaste, which is sublime as far fruit flavors in beer go. In the mouth, the beer feels medium in body, with a soft effervescence and a creamy mouthfeel that nearly reminds me of fresh fruit juice. The mouth is left clean and slightly wet from the acidity. Overall, this is a hell of an American Weisse, and a hell of a fruit beer. The strawberry flavors are fresh, and develop with the sip, and the acidity is completely under control, helping to add to the beer instead of killing all the other flavors. This beer is a fine example of the balance an American/Fruited Weisse should have. The plastic aroma is a little offputting, but the flavor more than makes up for it. This is a beer to try, and hopefully it is brewed again.
