Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA Feb 28, 2006 Nice brown/amberish color, small but decent lived tan head. The aroma was malty sweet with a hint of caramel and maybe even a slight smoky side coming through as well. The flavor was very nice, malty and sweet with some mild fruit notes coming through a bit of smokiness and a light caramel hint towards the end.It also has a bit of a mildly heavy feel to it with the alcohol not being to noticeable in the beginning but definately makes itself known in the end with a nice warming effect going down.Over all i’d have to say this is a very nice brew and well worth having again and again. 2beerguys (299), North Shore, Massachusetts, USA Feb 27, 2006 We didn’t love this one or hate it. The only distinguishable aroma was of a red wine, as well as alcohol. Pours a dark amber color with a large, fizzy off-white head. Hazy body. Both lightly sweet and acidic on the intial taste. Chalky residue on the finish. This beer seems like it wants to be sweet, but its not due to the overpowering alcohol taste. No malt aroma, but a malty taste. kevin62 (267), New Jersey, USA Feb 25, 2006 This brew was recently tasted at a beer reception and poured out a nice amber with a thin long lasting head. The taste was of malts with just a touch of sweetness.Pretty good. outerupt (133), Richmond, Virginia, USA Feb 23, 2006 22oz. "Bottle Conditioned in 2005." Pours a beautiful mahogany with medium coarse bubbles forming a vigorous head that slowly retracts leaving a thin but impressively lacy layer of bubbles. The aroma is expansive and inspiring: radish, brandy, banana’s foster, honeyed toast, and lightly roasted coffee comingle in the nose and permeate the flavor of the brew as well. The beer is just slightly sweet, though far less so than many others of this style with a healthy dose of hops providing harmony between malt, sugars, and alcohol. Doppelbocks can oftentimes be hit or miss for me and this one is right on the money. Quite impressive. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Feb 20, 2006 This is a great doppelbock esp. considering its huge abv. Pours a nice deep amber, almost brown but clear and a nice thin lasting off white head. Aroma is lots of munich malts, dark crystal, deep molasses and caramel with a touch of roastiness. Lots of sweet powerful big malts throughout the flavor with munich and dark crystal dominating. With all the sweetness and alcohol, this beer still isnt cloying at all. The high abv isnt really noticed at first but you can feel it after about half the bottle. Very nice. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA Feb 19, 2006 Pours deep red with a two-finger, large-bubbled head. Big, sweet aroma of toffee, nuts, and smoke, with some very perceptible roastiness. A little whiff of alcohol, but less than I’ve found in some less hefty Doppel Bocks. The flavor starts out just like the aroma, but heavier on the toffee, then turns fairly alcoholic before a dry and nutty ending with a hint of grassy hops. The alcohol lingers a bit, too. Overcarbonation gives the sweetness an unpleasant edge, but overall a good beer. Maybe too much alcohol; it’s more like an Eisbock, really. jgeiman (25), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 15, 2006 22 oz. Bottle: labeled "Bottle Conditioned in 2004." Rich dark amber color with a decent tan head on pouring. Mellow aroma- mainly molasses with sweet yeasty notes, very little spice or citrus. Big malty first impression shifts to quite hoppy finish with a lingering bitter charcoal stout-like aftertaste. Surprised by the hops at the end. Definitely coats the palate. I’d like it to finish more smoothly. My mouth feels like I just smoked a cigar. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Feb 14, 2006 10 oz glass on tap at Redbones, pre-EBF, in the company of MartinT, Rastacouere, tiggmtl and Olivier MTL. I’d been looking forward to this for a year since the insane, instant sell-out around last year’s EBF....would it be worth the anticipation? It’s hazy copper-amber with a small bit of lasting, off-white head...lots of caramel and vanilla in the sweet, thick nose, also touches of blackberry and chalk....thickly malty, very sweet body, with light herbal (oregano, sage) hops, licorice....turns smoky, dry, and burnt-charcoal at the end....very rich, decadent caky mouthfeel, alcohol helps cut the thickness towards the finish. Lovely, and worth the wait.
