TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 13, 2006 Pours a brownish almost golden orange amber with a large off white foamy head. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, with hints of fruit, licorice and some vanilla. Smooth and almost creamy on the tongue. Not picking up much of the high ABV. Flavor of a sweet yet roasted malt, brown sugar, lighter smoke and maybe some of the fruits I was picking up in the aroma. Some slight alcohol tingle at the end. gputty (456), Virgina Beach, Virginia, USA Feb 8, 2006 From bottle. Pours a deep orange/brown with frothy head that settles down with minimal lacing. Nose has lots of sweet malts. Flavor has more sweet malts with an alcohol finish. Not the best in their BIg Beer series. brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Feb 2, 2006 On tap at Milwaukee’s Landmark. Red brown color ,sweet malt aroma with hints of fruit and licorice, a pleasant malt, fruit and almost candy sugar taste, the kind of sweetness I’v always liked in a Doppel, yet I wouldn’t call this a complex brew, a least not compared to Celebrator. Alcohol is well hidden. JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Feb 1, 2006 Bright copper color with a hugh creamy looking beige head. Clean aroma. Scents of baked caramel and only a mild herbal backdrop. A touch of over-ripe fruit, which I believe is derived from the alcohol, but in no way a deterrent. I have this in three different glasses and it is amazing the different component each emits. This is pure bock "goodness". Truly a dopplebock. Chewy, lush and lightly oily in feel. Malt oozes from the glass and coats the teeth, gums and tongue. Toffee, caramel, dark brown sugar and an earthy pipe tobacco backdrop. Spicy finish with a touch of citrus. A solid doppel, where flavors don’t quite mesh at times, but still one that would not hesitate to set down with. As I near the end of the bomber, this has more hops than needed and reminds be of another "imperial oktoberfest". Prosit! OldRaspy (292), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jan 31, 2006 Poured a dark garnet color with a fine full tan head. Aroma was of malt and a caramel/vanilla scent. Flavor was a sweet roasted malt with a nice alcohol warming. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Jan 29, 2006 (22 oz. bottle (2005) from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/portland/downeast-beverage-co/974.htm target=blank>Downeast Beverage Co.) Pours a fairly light rubyish brown. Creamy biege head stays around. Weepy lacing. Aroma: malty sweetness, brown sugar, maybe licorice. Mouthfeel smooth but dryish. Tastes fairly sweet upfront, finishes with a bitterness that lingers. Some brown sugary taste. Sort of disappointed I couldn’t pick out many distinct tastes, in other words this was good but not very complex or distinctly flavorful. A little biting, maybe some aging would mellow this a bit and bring out more flavors. LiebeBier (788), Annapolis, Maryland, USA Jan 29, 2006 Over the past few years I have really come to enjoy a great Doppelbock. This is a fine example. Pours a dark brown/amber color with a thick tan head. Has a sweet caramel aroma. This beer immediately warms you as you drink it. While cold it has sweet roasted malt flavor with a sweet lingering finish. As it warms the alcohol becomes much more present. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 28, 2006 S’Muttonator pours to a beautiful, deep caramel color with a thick and creamy tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is sweet malty, with aromas of sweet malt, toffee, and hints of peppery alcohol. The palate is firm, with flavors of sweet malt, caramel, and toasty malt flavors, on a rich but very smooth and polished body. S’Muttonator finishes with more sweet and caramel malt flavors up front, then ends with a malty, cloying, warming burn that lingers.
An outstanding example of double bock, or dopple bock bier S’Muttonator is an excellent tribute to the style.
