TURDFERGUSON (1594), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Jan 12, 2006 overall not bad for the style, but just cant live up to my high ’celebartoresque’ expectations of what a doppel bock should taste like. much more hoppy, but still has the malty overtones of a good doppelganger. good, but not impressive. i say this a lot. paul9639 (116), New Hampshire, USA Jan 9, 2006 Wow! Pours chocolate brown with a quick to diminish head. Aroma is carmel/toffee, with faint alcohol notes. Flavor is of chocolate and toffee, with a great warming mouthfeel Well put together beer! CamdenD (606), Madrid, Spain Jan 3, 2006 Alcohol is present in this beer, not as overwhelming as in their Big A, but Smuttynose is NOT afraid to make alcohol part of the taste (take note, Stone and DFH!), and therefore you do not have an overwhelming hop or malt wave to wash away any intracasy in taste. Excellent. cvillebeer (134), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 2, 2006 Dark, strong and malty. Seemed little out of balance with noticeable alcohol burn. Otherwise, full, deep and satisfying. GreenDragon (213), Richmond, Virginia, USA Dec 30, 2005 Pours with a tiny white head that vanishes leaving behind a dark golden brown body. Sweetish aroma with the alcohol being prominant. Lively body with a malty taste. BitchesBrew (710), Berkeley, California, USA Dec 26, 2005 Updated: Feb 14, 2007[22 oz. bottle] Pours a clear, reddish brown color. Aroma is kind of alcoholic and sweet, a bit like Maple syrup. Complex caramel malts initially make the flavors, with sweetness at first, then a nutty/toasty breadiness. Bitterness is lightly spicy, showing in the finish. Very pleasing, smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol warmth is not harsh in any way. An outstanding beer, I always look forward to this release. freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Dec 23, 2005 A rich malty caramel aroma and flavor pervades this heady winter brew. Almost completely dominated by malt, the sweetness is kept in check with a slight rise in bitterness at the swallow and in the lingering aftertaste. A fine dopplebock with impressive attention to authenticity. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA Dec 21, 2005 Light brown head on a brown body. Sweet malty flavor and a molassas flavor.
