Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Dec 5, 2005 Bottle: Courtesy of Secret Santa. Lots of caramel, toffee, and chocolate int eh aroma with hints of nuttiness. Pours a deep transparent reddish-orange with a moderate off-white head. Flavors of caramel, chocolate, toffee, and molasses up front. Light hints of roastiness in the background. Light fruitiness and moderate citrus hops in the finish. The hoppiness in the finish gives it a barley wine character to the beer that I really enjoy. jgb9348 (2492), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Nov 13, 2005 Slightly hazy brown coloured body with a nice tan head, completed by strong ruby highlights. Aroma of roasted malt, pit fruits, prunes and a light toffee scent. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet nutty fruityness with a roasty malt flavour and a good balance between bitter and sweet. Aftertaste clean, but showing good qualities from the taste. Overall, a good beer - what the style should be, but missing some new complexities. Great to try though! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Village Pump Liquors in College Park, Maryland on 01-April-2005 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 31, 2005 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark ruby with a 1/2 inch fluffy head. Lots of carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass, maintaining head well. Aroma dominated by toffee and syrupy malt. Some alcohol aroma as well. Huge malty taste, tons of toffee, iced tea, and some alcohol. Bitter lingering finish that seems a little harsh and muddled. Very full bodied, sticky and syrupy with moderate amount of carbonation. Overall, more of a one trick pony, huge malt but no balance. Could be a little cleaner as well. hopdog (5534), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 20, 2005 Bottle shared thanks to egajdzis (thanks!). Poured a medium and clear mahogany color with an averaged sized head. Aromas of toffee, maple, light smoke, nuts, dark fruits and caramel. Tastes of dark fruits, medium alcohol presence, light smoke and light nuts. Medium sweet. bp (451), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 5, 2005 Bottle purchased at New Beer Distributors (NYC) - smooth and thick mouthfeel, the alcohol taste is hidden well, definitely a malty taste, a very good doppelbock jon112981 (327), Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA Aug 26, 2005 Bottle. Candy like aroma. Very matly taste and finish. Leaves a taste of caramel in your mouth for a while after it’s gone. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 26, 2005 As soon as I popped the cap, emitting the slightest of carbonation hisses, I knew this could be great. Poured a nice rosy mahogany color with some tan bubbles along the edges and bubbly cloisters scattered intermittently on the surface. Smells oh so good. Rich, vibrant caramel, chocolatey and a little smoke on the backend paired with some toasty pecans. Rich and sweet all over. Flavor? Yes. This one gives an all-out one-two punch. Velvety, solidified chocolatey caramel rolls in, resonating with an unparalleled richness, reminiscent of Rolos. Some pecan casings and hazelnuts for robust dimension, and a soothing vanilla crème current underneath it all. Woodsy-cedar backdrop to an ever present caramel decadence, transitioning to hints of amaretto in the aftertaste.
So full-bodied it’s ridiculous. Slowly seeps in and accentuates every nuance in its wake. Balance has never been better. Daunting, chewy and impressive malt complexity. Carbonation is so toned down and at most preferable levels, and the noble hopping has never been more regal. Finishes like white chocolate covered cashews. I’m so happy I drank this beer. Big thanks to tpkenned for landing this one and sending it my way! beerhugger (541), Oshawa, Ontario, Canada Jul 25, 2005 Hot hoppy brew. Well drank cold but the alcohol burst through more than I think it was meant too. Plenty of sweet bready malt join in with the aforementioned hot hoppiness and a bit of spice and raisin fruitiness too. Brwon sugar sweet on the tongue with a medium body and medium lingering finish. Decent.
