anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Mar 14, 2009 Bottle. Pours a slighlty hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a malty spicy yeasty aroma with some hints of dark fruit. Sweetish malty spicy yeasty caramel flavor. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel finish. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Mar 13, 2009 Poured this bomber into my large Pilsner glass the body was a hazy burgandy in color. The big foamy of white head seemed to last the whole beer
Big and malty nose on this thing, dark fruits follow as she warms up. The flavors are malt forward, sweet molasses raisins and figs. The thing is I get no warmth from this, and at 10% I am surprised medium feel in the mouth with good carbonation.
Good drinkability on this quite a relaxing one to drink but you do feel the alcohol in the end. I’ll grab another one to cellar for longer next time
SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 11, 2009 22 oz. bottle - thanks for tweety for the bonus; pours dark brown with slight haze and reddish glow against the light; frothy, light tan head; aromas of syrup, maple, caramel and dank fruit; lots of dry, rich malt with slight spice; quite dry and really opens up as it warms; alcohol is obvious and 2nd glass was an absolute delight malrubius (969), Valley Stream, New York, USA Mar 10, 2009 22 ounce bottle in Paulaner half litre. Brownish red with lasting fluffy head and lotsa crap floating in it. toasted caramel and woodsy port aroma. Toasted caramel mild fruit and woodsy flavor. Medium-full body. NIce texture. Kinda like a doppelbock barleywine. I tried to find something wrong with this (other than the floaters), but I couldn’t Rich and luxurious, tasty enticing....and strong. j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Feb 27, 2009 Bottle. Began the pour as a clear amber, but by the time I was done with it, it was hazy deep brown bordering on opaque. Large light beige head. Particulate matter in suspension. Sweet malt, yeast, toast, caramel. Sweet, with a bit of stone fruit, and complex malt. Alcohol sneaks up at the end of the finish for a nice warming note. I quite like this one, to the point that I’ve actually bought it more than once.
Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 23, 2009 From bottle. Has a pretty sweet nose to it, with nice malty brown sugar and light caramel. Mild bitter hops in the nose, with a light astringent metallic whiff. Oxidated Tootsie Rolls and bitter citrus pith, fruity esters. Dark ruby brown with medium foamy lacing off-white head. Medium-heavy watery body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet with lots of caramel, brown sugar, and candi sugar. Loads of viscous sugary malt with browned notes. Dry nutty-sweet bitter finish with neutral hop flavor. Good bittering that prevents this from being cloying. After is sweet and leaves some sugar lingering at the back of the throat. Light bittering on the front of the tongue. Overall, a decent doppelbock. TearsforBeers (171), Ohio, USA Feb 15, 2009 Thanks to mcox90 for this one!
I really like the name of this beer. It pours a very deep burgundy, with tan head, lovely. The aroma is of sweet malts, overripe fruit, and some roastiness. I get flavors of sweet malt, caramel, and brown sugar. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Overall a pretty good beer. grandridge (222), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Feb 1, 2009 Red-brown with a small brown head. Aroma is sweet malt, cane sugar, caramel, dark fruits and nuts. Flavor is sweet, it’s a malt bomb with a slight hop profile in an attempt to balance the massive malts. I actually enoyed this brew even though I’m more into hops. Mouthfeel is rich and thick which makes the brew smooth to drink. Alcohol is present but not overwhelming, maybe the age has toned it down a bit. Finish is a little syrupy and sweet.
