noncaloric (602), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Nov 20, 2008 Updated: Mar 9, 2009Aroma is caramelized malts, vanilla, a little alcohol bitterness. Pours dark brown, thin beige head, significant lacing. Flavor has rich malt complexity: malt syrup, caramel, vanilla, nuts, but it’s cut by a significant medicinal bitterness that takes the pleasure out of it. Smooth, but syrupy cloying on the palate. theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Nov 19, 2008 22 oz bottle courtesy of mcox99. Pour is very unfiltered cloudy brown with visible chunks. Aroma of earthy slight ash, some fruit sweetness taste is the nose, with a very unfiltered body. Palate is full. I loved the depth and complexity of this beer. Nice one. dogfish120love (250), west hartford, Connecticut, USA Nov 18, 2008 Pours a dark brown almost black with a very thin head. Smells heavily of Malt and some coffee, chocolate, raisin and alcohol. Tastes of sweet malt, plum, raisin, prune and coffee. Palate: : sticky syrupy sweet. Makes lips stick together. Nice warming alcohol finish. Very drinkable, but more of a one beer sit and sip for a long duration WeeHeavySD (2941), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Nov 16, 2008 Bomber from Phhd. Pours dark orange with a 3 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and slightly malty. Taste is sweet malty and overall quite good. This is a great dopplebock. Lots of flavor, lots of complexity. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Nov 3, 2008 Bomber, drank all by my lonesome. This one makes me #1 for Smutty, woohoo! Suck it, JoeMcPhee! Sometimes after drinking this much of a single beer, something that was otherwise dull starts to shine, and complexities begin to reveal themselves. Other times, something that was OK at first starts getting really dull and tired, and one doesn’t even want to finish it. This beer is of the latter category. The aroma is vegetal, beety, some nyc street vendor potato knish, some white sugar. The flavor is sweet and syrupy, with a very thick body, but it is hard to enjoy it more than perhaps small quantities. This is a bit too much ’’double’’ of a doppelbock. Really just overwhelming in most regards. I’m not too crazy about this. lemasney (398), Trenton, New Jersey, USA Nov 1, 2008 Style and Glass: Doppelbock; mug, stein, stem glass
ABV, Volume & Calories: 8.5% in 22 fl oz. estimated at 400 C
Purchased at: Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $5.89
Aroma: nice, syrup, maple, mold, rose, citrus.
Visuals: interesting packaging, iced tea, reddish brown, slightly hazy, off white long lasting head, intricate lace.
Taste: well balanced, high malt, medium hops, medium high strength.
Palate: high quality, spicy, scratchy, dry, longer drying finish.
Overall: A very well done beer, and one of the few doppelbocks I’ve truly enjoyed. If they were all like this, I might like the style more. I’d have this again, though it’s not what I’d call a favorite. High value for a well crafted brew. blutt59 (2042), Dallas, Texas, USA Nov 1, 2008 2006 gusher, garnet gold color with a filmy head, aroma of spiced fruit, good chocolate and raisin flavors with some blue cheese on the finish elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Nov 1, 2008 Smuttynose Smuttonator 10/31/08 (bottle. Pours dark brown, with little head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and chocolate. Flavor is full-bodied, rich, and very tasty. There are strong chocolate notes present, blended with some wood. As is stylistically predictable, Summtonator has little hop profile to be detected. Nonetheless, a very tasty brew that faired well in my beer tasting amongst friends.
