Dark brown, the color of a chocolate lab. The head was thick and brown, leaving a substantial lacing.
The aroma was malty on a background of sweetness. The result was caramelly but not quite caramel.
The flavor was a bit short lived. The carbonation was nice but rushed the malty sweet tones and rushed to a metallic aftertaste.
Overall warm and certainly above average. cbrixius (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 29, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Poured a cloudy red with a very subtle nose. Very creamy tan head. However, flavor was a bit too sweet and raisiny for my taste. Very yeasty, rich mouthfeel. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 27, 2008 (Bottle). Malty sweet aroma. Color a dark reddish brown, with a moderate creamy tan head. Flavor is attractively complex, although a little sweeter than I expect in a doppelbock. Some fruit, lots of malt. Good mouthfeel. Nice effort, but not up to the standard of Celebrator. craftycarl21 (542), South Hero, Vermont, USA

Pours dark reddish brown with lively, and somewhat large head. Aroma is caramel, orange, and lighter sweet fruit. Some dark fruit in there as well. Biscuit, and malt character powerful. Flavor is tons of caramel, ripe fruit, cider, and huge maltyness. Palate is smooth and full. I’m proud to live in New Hampshire- Smuttynose kicks ass.
