The ‘-ator’ suffix that’s found on the names of double bock beers around the world is one of the most respected traditions in a beer world that seems to be focused on ignoring standards and customs. Smuttynose is proud to adhere to that tradition in the naming, brewing methods and taste of S’muttonator Double Bock.
S’muttonator Double Bock displays the characteristically full malt flavor that can only come from using the best German specialty malts and a traditional decoction mashing technique. The extra effort also adds a lot of extra time to each batch, but that’s the only way to get the nuttiness, toffee notes and a characteristically smooth melanoidin character beer drinkers expect from a double bock. When you drink your S’muttonator, you’ll see that it’s time well spent.

22 oz bottle, Whole Foods Columbus. Hazy, deep, red-brown; 2-finger beige head disappears completely. Aroma is deep and heavy; sweet, malty, apple, raisin, toffee, bubble gum, yeast. Flavor rich, sweet, chewy, malty, caramel, vanilla, nutty, grass, a little spicy, and just barely some alcohol warmth in the exhale. Medium-thick body with more-than-average carbonation; medium coarseness in the bubbles but this really froths up in the mouth; slick, almost oily; barely sticky. There is virtually no alcohol presence here; well done for a nearly 10% beer. This one came out of nowhere; -nice- beer, Smuttynose.

Bottle @ home. Cellared 14 months. Copper to red color with a small tan head and a little lacing. Warming malty and fruity aroma with raisins apricots, toffee, dark bread, plums, biscuits and nuts. Big bodied with low to medium carbonation. Lots of fruits and sweet maltiness in the taste. Flavors of toffee caramel, plums, apricots, raisins, bread, nuts and syrup. Finish is spicy and fruity with some chocolate and well hidden alcohols. Distinctly bitter and quite dry, overall balanced finish. Really nice.

Big and malty are the two words for this. The malt flavor dominates throughout, and it’s really complex and tasty. Lots of caramel and fruit flavor, with a bit of grainy toastiness too. Great example of the style.

Bottle: Slightly hazy, brown, with a beige head. Baked dark bread, toffee, raisin scent. Taste is sweet, old raisins.....toffee malt, a little alcohol bittering. Pretty nice.....wish it were a tad chewier, though.

Bottle. Raisin, toffee malt, hay, and alcohol aroma. Medium brown with small head. Sweet raisin/dried apricot, toffee malt, and moderately bitter herbal hay and alcohol flavor. Body on the light side for the style. Pretty good.

Bomber. Pours a muddy brown with a tan head and aroma of malt and caramel. Taste is of malt and caramel up front, with alcohol and bread notes into the malty finish.

With Z, pours a rich black pour with a sustained beige head. Nose is deep caramel and toffee, sweet and sugary. Taste is sweet chocolate malt with the alcohol punching through, quite tasty since I do not relish doppels. Finishes on the same sweet chocolate tasting notes with a moderately long finish. Good Doppelbock. quaff score 7 / 10
