Brown liquid with a beautiful dark ruby tint. Hella’ huge head of light brown foam. Excellent retention and fantastic lacing.
Nice big molasses nose with a good malty presence. Good caramel presence, also. Slight hint of citrus hops. An element of fresh bread.
The molasses flavor is right out front, and quite prominent. Big yeasty breadiness. Good dark fruit presence. Mostly raisins, figs and even some notes of dates(!). Very nice rich maltiness. Hints of rich caramel and mild chocolate. Very slight hint of hop notes. Finish has a little bit of pepperiness in it.
Great full body. Nice and thick, almost chewey. This is how I like a beer to feel in my mouth. Very creamy and tasty.
For 10%ABV, this is a deceptively smooth and easy drinking brew. I’d have no problem drinking multiples or recommending that others do the same.
On top of all of that, I am a fan of the Double Bock/Dopplebock style, and this is a top ten, for me. Probably even a top five.
Very well done, Smuttynose!

The taste was the same with alittle smoke coming through. Sweet, smooth, and complex. One of the better beers I’ve had in awhile. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 17, 2005 Bottle. A real whopper of a dopplebock, thats for sure. I am loving Smuttynose more with each and every new beer of theirs I drink. In fact, the bottle lets you know what year it was made and informs you that it’s bottle conditioned. What a novel approach. Now if everyone else would do this, I would be in heaven. This stuff whacks ya right in the nose with bourbon, malt and ripe cherries. The taste has the most fantastic blend of roasted malts follwed with a nice alcohol kick in the ass. This shit is awesome and will probably do nothing but get better. Hats off to Smuttynose again. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 3, 2006 Bottle: Poured a clear nut-brown dopplebock with a huge foamy head with excellent retention. Huge aroma of freshly baked banana bread is quite just unbelievable. The freshly baked banana bread with a good slightly sweet malt backbone also dominates taste. Alcohol is well hidden and body is just above average with some medium carbonation. Definitely one of the best dopplebock I ever had. axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma is sweet malts and dark cherries with a little alcohol. Smooth, sweet malt flavor with hints of raisins, figs, and cherries. Nice alcohol warming with more cherry flavors in the finish. This is a great doppel!! doublebock (198), USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 23, 2006 22oz. "Bottle Conditioned in 2005." Pours a beautiful mahogany with medium coarse bubbles forming a vigorous head that slowly retracts leaving a thin but impressively lacy layer of bubbles. The aroma is expansive and inspiring: radish, brandy, banana’s foster, honeyed toast, and lightly roasted coffee comingle in the nose and permeate the flavor of the brew as well. The beer is just slightly sweet, though far less so than many others of this style with a healthy dose of hops providing harmony between malt, sugars, and alcohol. Doppelbocks can oftentimes be hit or miss for me and this one is right on the money. Quite impressive. Ibrew2or3 (2848), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA

The aroma was big and sweet caramel. Yum, makes it somewhat irresistible. Of course the flavor follows suit with tasty caramelness and also some light amounts of dark fruitiness. Very nice Doble Bock that doesn’t become too sweet like others can.
