Thanks to BuckeyeBoy BuckeyeBoy (1639), Boise, Idaho, USA Jan 15, 2008 22oz Bottle thanks mkgrenwel for sending this brew. pours out a cloudy dark amber topped with a off white head. A very nice sweet and malt aroma. Tast of sweet caramel and brown sugar. As for the 11% i can’t pick it up at all. Very good. Brigadier (1212), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Jan 9, 2008 650 ml bottle
Thanks to miketd for sharing this at a recent get together. The side of the bottle said it was a 2005 vintage which means it has held up suprisingly well. Now that I see it is a barleywine perhaps I should not be too surprised. Now would be a good time to crack it open but it may also be solid for at least two or three more years.
Aroma / Appearance - A one finger white head surged to the top of glass before subsiding into an ashen white shelter. Underneath I was able to see through the fluid caramel body. The nose was sweet caramel or toffee. Closing my eyes I thought of fresh toast with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Flavor / Palate - The taste was a totally different experience. Bone dry from the start it sucks all moisture from the mouth. For an 11% ABV beer it was easy to drink. The thick mouthfeel might be a little much in time but one glass was certainly enough to be enjoyable. Smuttynose had or has a winner with this one. miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jan 7, 2008 Bottle from Secret Santa(I think). Pour is a coppery/plum color with no head at all. Aroma is Fruit, malt, boozy and wine like. Flavor is like liquid leather and wheat. This is bone dry. Medium body and an abrupt finish. Dry, dry and dry. wilkie (1189), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jan 1, 2008 Bottle. (rating on laudered receipt from spring 2007). Pours amber, hazy, medium frothy white head, with nice lacing. Aroma is malty and hoppy, with pine, citrus, yeast and bread. Flavor is similar--caramel, yeast, bread, and a nice alcohol afterburn. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Dec 30, 2007 22-oz bottle received from SS ’07, holdenn. Pours clear amber with a spare, frothy, white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (cookie, caramel), heavy hops (flowers, perfume, pine), light yeast (sweat) with notes of heavy alcohol, apple, and honey. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness. dkachur (2315), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Dec 29, 2007 Bottle. Part 3 of 5 of my barleywine-fest, even though it’s not quite a barleywine. Pours viscous amber with a tannish head. Aroma is a sweeter and lighter version than your typical barleywine. Tastes like a failed banana liqueur I made a few years back. Alcoholic and harsh. This is absolutely horrific. ante (2904), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 29, 2007 Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Hazy pale amber with a creamy white foam. Perfumy aroma of coriander, green bananas and sugar. Clean and fairly alcoholic flavour of of green bananas, dried oranges and vanilla. Dried oranges, wheat and alcohol in the finish.
