zach8270 (2053), Henrietta, New York, USA Apr 25, 2007 (bottle - 22 oz: 2006 vintage) Copper color with a thin layer of white head that goes away quickly and leaves a soapy residue. Light aroma of wheat, malt, sugar, and alcohol. Mostly sweet malts. Flavor is very potent at the beginning with a lot of malts, caramel, toffee, wheat, and alcohol. Chewy mouthfeel and very warming on the finish. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 21, 2007 Dark buckwheat colour and taste, with different wheats. If you like wheat beer, this is a must try. Bit heavier, so match with meat and patatoes. Drinkable.I enjoyed these wheat wine without the question marks that I had with another wheat wine. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Apr 15, 2007 dark amber with no head..aroma of light wheat and heavy sugar..flavor of heavy booze, lemony citrus hops, and a slightly stagnat malty backbone.. jblendy (518), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Apr 11, 2007 Hazy copper/amber pour with a small reddish-tan head.Semi-sweet aroma of caramel, fermenting fruit, notes of cherries, a light note of vanilla, and a bit of alcohol. Initially very boozy flavor. Notes of caramel and fruit, but a bit subdued by the alcohol. Lots of potential, but this needs some time in the bottle. Palate is medium, bitter, with a bit of sour and dry fruitiness TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 10, 2007 2005 Bottle. Pours a mostly translucent deep golden amber with a smaller size bubbly off white head that left some slight lacing and poured with large bubbles. Aroma of molasses, deep dark fruits, caramel, some nuts, light alcohol and vanilla. A lot going on in this aroma. Flavor of vanilla, almost giving off some oak characteristics, bourbon, dark fruits, caramel, molasses, with some lingering hop bitterness. I would guess this one had a good bit of hop flavor when it was young. Some alcohol burn but no an 11% hotness. Aged rather well. Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Apr 8, 2007 THOUGHTS: It sure smelled like a barley wine, but it didn’t tast like one. It didn’t hide the alcohol all that well. Not as sweet as I would have thought from the aroma. Way too much metallic aftertaste. Not a bad beer, but not a great barley wine or wheat beer. Not a good combo of styles. Instead of the two styles complimenting each other, they kind of robbed the eachother of their best parts. It kinda reminds me of how those darn killer bees were created. Instead of getting hard-working, docile bees; they got lazy, violent ones.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a flat, clear, medium orange-red-brown with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was moderate caramel malt, moderate citrus hops, a little vanilla and alcohol. The initial flavor was light sweetness, while the finish was heavy sweetness and light bitterness with a long duration. The body was medium to full and somewhat dry even though it was syrupy with soft carbonation and a metallic finish. WeeHeavySD (2942), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Apr 5, 2007 2006 Bomber via trade with adriann910ss. Thanks. Pours ruby orange with a thin off white head. Nose is big with alcohol, dried fruit, and sweetness. Sweet and mellow with a nice rounded edge that gets bigger towards the back of the throat a bit bigger in the ned than I had anticipated. I like this brew good characteristics for a BW, not too strong not weak. With warming this really starts to open up and taste great, carmel comes out and just a great vinious quality. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Apr 1, 2007 (22 oz. bottle (2006) from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/massachusetts/westborough/julio’s-liquors/461.htm target=blank>Julio’s Liquors) A nice barleywine...Pours lightly hazy orange with some light reddish tint. About 1/4" of off-white head. Floral hop aroma is quite pronounced with some candy-like malt sweetness beneath. Mouthfeel rather soft, lightly prickly, a touch sticky in finish. Thin webby rings of lacing. Flavor is light rock candy sweetness overlain by pine-like hop taste and medium bitterness. Alcohol quite well-hidden. Some vanilla flavor as it becomes warm. Pine and medium bitter through finish. Pretty well-balanced. I was anxious to try this to compare it to what I assume is its very close cousin - Portsmouth Wheat Wine. I liked both and they are very similar in appearance, aroma and probably palate but this one is less sharp, less sweet and definitely less hot. Had sort of a softer quality that reminded me of Big A IPA.
