chimplechamp (463), Oslo, Norway Mar 2, 2007 pours ruby red copper with an offwhite head. smells buttery malts, some grass fruits and berries, and some alcohol like bourbon or sherry or something. tastes strong bourbon type alcohol flavor, buttery malts, and grassy hop finish. it is fruity. and delicious. the alcohol is quite pronounced. npdempse (931), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA Feb 27, 2007 Clear copper with a negligible head. Beautiful nose--fruity, with grapefruit and apricots; hints of pine, and a wonderful honey sweetness beneath it all. Flavor is fairly sweet--more honey, some caramel--with a pronounced dry bitterness, some orange and apricot. Big thanks to AxlLives for sending this one. SledgeJr (2957), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Feb 26, 2007 At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail.pours orange in color with a thin off-white head. The aroma is just amazing! Honey and floral hops with maybe a touch of cotton candy. Flavor has a huge wheaty malt syrup that renders this beer so smooth that you get no heat whatsoever. great beer. joss (3633), Garching b. München, Germany Feb 25, 2007 Bottle. Red brown, low head. Fruity and piney nose. Fudge base flavor, berries, bubblegum, herbs. Sparkly mouthfeel. Fresh and dangerous. TAR (2088), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Feb 24, 2007 2006 edition: Hazy apricot. Creamy ivory ring surrounds a scattered center of foam. Muted pear, honey, peach and candy apple aromas. Suggestion of oaken vanilla. Delicate prickles of soft, expansive carbonation. Bottle conditioned. Viscous honeyed-pear sweetness clings to the palate, while fairly sharp alcohol contributes ample gullet warmth. Minor papery oxidation accentuates the alcohol and sweetness. Rather monotonous in terms of character and flavor, as the yeast seems dull and fails to generate any estery luster. Glimpse of fresh plums and peach candy is perceptible, but there just isn’t a whole lot of brightness. Peppery alcohol lifts some of the sweetness with a dry minty glow. Very softly fruity, but no complementary supple juiciness from the hops. Leafy acidity hampers the body slightly. With the exception of some added starchiness and body, the yeast pour is neutral for the most part. Finishes slightly sappy, sugary sweet, and bouncily grainy, with lingering notes of honeyed pears, gummy candy and some papery/oxidized characteristics. Maybe too subdued for its own good, but I don’t detect any flaws. One thing’s for sure: This is just begging for more hop flavor and bitterness to counteract the sweetness and enhance the fruitiness. I would love to see this with lightly dry-hopped and liberally dosed with Hallertau or Styrian Goldings. Lots of potential here. mbrandon2w (109), Worcester, Massachusetts, USA Feb 23, 2007 I enjoyed this one. First time trying a wheat wine, and I was impressed. It had a nice wheat flavor to it, with something underneath that I just can’t put my finger on (sorry). Had a great warmth to it. A very smooth sipper; good on a cold night. drewbeerme (2223), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 17, 2007 22oz bottle, 2006, pours goldish amber color with very minimal white head. nose is very weak, has flutters of caramel, cheese, and paper. flavor has surprising amount of bitterness for how little hop aroma it has, other notes of toffee, wheat bread, and butter. mouthfeel is a pretty thin and fizzy. alcohol is very well hidden. this could use more unfermented sugars. finished dry, bitter, and with alcohol warmth. i liked this more than my rating indicates but if their going for an american style bw they need to bring in some PNW hop aroma. thornecb (1737), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Feb 13, 2007 Pours bright, clear amber into a snifter. Conglomerate/micro tan head leaves splotchy lacing as it slowly recedes. Strong vanilla, malt and alcohol aromas. Creamy and full with upfront sweet caramel and a lasting alcohol-tinged bitter vanilla finish.
