MiP (8793), Sønderborg, Denmark Sep 8, 2008 Cask at GBBF08. Weak caramel aroma. Clear dark chestnut colour. Very small tan head. Quite sweet. Caramelly hop flavour, a little hop bite, probably mostly alcohol. Quite nice, but I do not taste any wheat. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Sep 1, 2008 Courtesy of tpd975 hooking our weekly tasting group up with a yummy barleywine. You know what I like!! Pours hazy copper with thin gold edges and thin tan head. The aroma is plums, prunes, crystal malts, sweet malts, pine hops and some alcohol heat. The taste is sweet sticky sugar malts mixing seamlessly with some caramel candy. Those rich tasty notes are followed by prunes, dried cherries, figs, pears and raisins. The wheated malt note isn’t all that noticeable or less than I was expecting anyway. I can get a sense of the wheat just behind the rich malt and caramel goodness. Yeah, I can get used to drinking a bomber of this. Thanks again Greg. Rune (2744), Tromsø, Norway Sep 1, 2008 Powerful stuff with smell of alcohol and malts. Bittersweet taste with spicy wheat, vanilla and hints of hop resin. Alcoholic notes all the way. Thin, off-white head over a copper coloured body. Full bodied. Well worth drinking in a small glass (third pint at GBBF, 06.08.2008). MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Aug 24, 2008 A Mes rate: gravicask at GBBF. A superb rich amber colour. Stunning wheat and barley sugar. Thick, luscious, chewy, slight cheese, loads of wheat and a lovely boozy hit. Full bodied malt base holds it all up really well. A huge warm blanket of a beer and I really liked it. maeib (4677), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England Aug 20, 2008 Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - GBBF 2008. An amber coloured beer which is full bodied both in the nose and the mouh. Great alcohol notes and a full malty taste. No obvious wheat notes. leaparsons (4659), Leicester, Leicestershire, England Aug 17, 2008 Cask, GBBF 08. Dark copper with a small head. Aromas are toffee malts with peppery pine hops, pear and grapefruit. Evident alcohol. Flavours are syrupy sweet toffee malts with autumn fruit. Hoppy with lots of spices. Peppery pine on the finish. Good stuff. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden Aug 16, 2008 Updated: Feb 24, 2009(Cask at GBBF, London, 5 Aug 2008) Dark reddish brown colour with brief, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with caramel, dried fruit and hops. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, hops, yeast and alcohol. Very vinous, warming and powerful, but strangely enough with a nice balance. Very nice beer. Rerate: (draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 23 Feb 2009) Deep ruby colur with frothy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of caramel and wild berries. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, caramel, wild berries, rubber and generous doses of citrussy hops in the finish. Full bodied, fairly sweet. Powerful and warming. An excellent example of a fairly odd beer style. rauchbier (2992), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England Aug 14, 2008 Cask, GBBF 08. Bronze, thin but lasting off white head and gentle condition. Good balance of hop resin and caramel sweetness in the aroma, sweet and sticky maltiness in the mouth with a touch of spiciness and solid hop resin notes, lingering bittersweet alcoholic finish with some biscuit.
