3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thick red pour, hardly any head. Nose is roasted malt. More sweet than bitter. Middle is strong toffee and faint dried fruit. Finish is still fairly sweet. Not bad, but also not an abbey ale.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a dark mahogany color with a grayish head of foam. The aroma has caramel, candi sugar, dates, cinnamon. The taste is mostly sweet, but does get dry and a little earthy upon the swallow. On the verge of ashy as well. Thicker mouthfeel. Moreso than I was expecting. Low to medium carbonation. Decent dubbel, but won’t knock anybody’s socks off.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Nothing wrong with it but it’s a far cry from an actual Abbey Dubbel. Sweet and malty with just a touch of spice.

2.7 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Smuttynose Winter Ale is good but not a standout. Dark reddish brown pour but only a light short-lived head. Aroma is light -- stone fruit notes. Taste is caramel and stone fruit with a slight alcohol burn on the back end. Not complex at all. Smuttynose Winter Ale isn’t bad but there are better choices in this category.

Dark pour from draft at beer bistro. Off white head. Fruity and blackberry aroma. Taste is kind of sweet but not overly for this style. Liked it much more than expected
