Smuttynose Winter Ale is a full-bodied, amber beer brewed with a special Trappist ale yeast. Bottle. Poured reddish-brown with a small head that dissipated quickly. Has a floral and slight coffee flavor to it. Some heat towards the good-sized finish, but no complaints here. Nice to know Iím the first in Jersey to rate. Of course, I have fairly easy access, but thatís neither here nor there ;)

Pours a nice cola colored brown. Aromas of dark malts, fruit, and a touch of spice. Has flavors of chocolate, caramel, and a touch of wood.

Not sure Iím in tune with the Belgian dubbel style-ry, as thatís one of my favorites, and this bears little resemblance. However, itís not bad, whatever it is. Pours a nice dark brown with thin tan head that eventually fades to a ring. Color is very nice, darker than any dubbel Iíve seen. Aroma is its weakest area - very flat, with just slight notes of dark fruit and malt sweetness. Nothing bad, just mild. Flavor is much better than the nose, with a medium-light body delivering some nice plums and raisins without ever being dry or astringent. Fairly smooth mouthfeel and decent finish make this okay. Iíll try again fresher, since I got this at end of season.

Deep brown/red, like an unfiltered apple cider. Sweet, yeasty, fruity nose...not too overpowering. Thick tan head that disappears with lacing after a few minutes. Spices, fruit, slight bittering hops dominate the taste. Nutmeg, weak cinnamon, banana, cloves. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with mild carbonation.

17/II/16 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle @ home - BB: III/10/15 or 16 (smudged ink) (2016-163) Thanks to Tim DB for picking me up this bottle!

Clear purple brown beer, creamy beige irregular head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: sweet malts, caramel, some banana, hint of mocha. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: some alcohol, banana, lots of dried fruits, bit earthy, dark chocolate, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: lots of dried fruits, raisins, banana, caramel, soft sweetness, more chocolate.

Bottle pour into tulip pint glass. Aroma is strong dark fruit/apple smell with astringent alcohol like acetone or witch hazel. Appearance is deep red, almost like a sangria, with huge chunks of dark yeast floating about (forgot to withhold last bit in the bottle--díoh!), no sparkle, quickly-fading 1/2 finger-width head to ring of off-white. No lacing. Taste is dark fruit moderate sweetness. Palate is medium bodied with sticky, thick texture, lively carbonation (stings a little) and dry finish. Overall, this certainly gets the fruity end of the taste scale but lack of complexity and deficits in aroma, appearance and palate drag it down.

Bottle. Cloudy, dark amber with a very small off-white head. Aroma is spicy with hints of caramel. Taste is spicy and slightly sweet like brown sugar.

Interesting beer - parts of this are outstanding - armoa, color, and some of the taste... more of a winter warmer than dubbel...great aroma of dark fruits, toffee, brown sugar. dirty hazy dark brown sludgy pour. taste better as it warms and some great flavors - doesnít all come together perfectly but worth a couple of bottles.

Definitely like a dubbel. Caramel, dried raisins/figs, sour yeast along with very mild hops bitterness. Fairly warming. Would be better with food as opposed to just on its own, as I tried it.

Copper pour from the bottle. Taste is grain, dough, mild citrus, malt and booze. Warm finish. Nice.
