Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful fruity nose. We set aside a portion of the batch to age in bourbon barrels to allow the stouts chocolate and caramel flavors to marry with the woods natural vanilla and toastiness. The final blend pairs well with both savory dishes and your favorite desserts.

Definetly Belgium yeast. Great dark fruit smell. The bourbon barrell age adds a great deep coffee taste.

Bomber. Poured deep, garnety-brown with a creamy beige head. The aroma picked up a nice blend of darker fruits and bakerís chocolate with accents of vanilla and cloves.. more dry, white spices and a hit of bourbon and oak on the back of the nose.. lots of Belgian yeast impression going on, and not all that much barrel. The flavor found near-burnt dark chocolates, some dark fruits, and licorice at the core, with tangy barrel, a touch of bourbon, and vanilla around.. fruity yeast and spices clashed a little with tangy bourbon barrel on the warm, dry finish.

Bottle purchased at Healthy Living in Burlington, Vermont. Diggity-dark color with the faintest trace of a light brown hint of a head circling the edge. Earthy, yeasty aroma accompanied by a moderate alcoholy tune with a quiet burbony harmony. Once in the mouth, it is quite fluid (not quite at "watery" but it still has a refreshing quality to it), and hefts an active effervescence - not overpowering, but it definitely stands up and makes its presence known. While itís making its way across the tongue, a woody, toasty, choco-mel combo stops by and says hi before heading warmly downstairs. Another winner from Smuttynose. Have I ever lamented before how I dearly wish that liíl Smuttynose seal would work hard making these big beers year-round instead of once a year (if that)? Maybe his flippers are too short or something.

Draft at the Alehouse Pours a very dark brown, nearly black with a frothy tan head. Aroma is rich dark fruit - plum and fig - with notes of Belgian chocolate, molasses, and sweet bourbon. Silky and light - but not thin - I drank this rather quickly. Flavor is an amalgam of plum fruit, sweet bourbon, fruity Belgian yeast, flutters of chocolate, coffee, and licorice. A delicious, delicate beer that is not as sweet as it sounds.

On draft at church key in DC. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Toasted malt aroma. Some chocolate and toffee in the flavor. Finishes on the thin side.

Aroma is Belgian yeast, bananas/bubble gum and vinous notes. The flavor is bananas, fruit, roasted malts, vinous notes and a mild sourness in the finish.

Aroma is belgian sweet with dark fruits, molasses, and chocolate notes. Pours black with a chalky tan head which sticks around after it fizzles. Taste has peaty notes of oak, dark figs, roast coffee, slight licorice and molasses. Finally a belgian stout that tastes like a belgian ale. The bourbon is slightly present as a sweet peaty taste. Didnít wow me like a barrel-aged stout should but it is very good.

Usually not a big fan of the Belgian Stout style, but this one was aged in bourbon barrels so gave it a shot. Good balance of stout and Belgian, without too much of the Belgian sweetness. Nice stout, with a definite chocolate presence. Not too much in the way of bourbon, however.

From the 2012 big bottle. The pour is a deep ebony brown with a moderate short lasting head. An array of aromas fill my nose including sweet dark malts, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, smoke, cherry, and a dash of hops. The body is medium to full. The taste is malty up front with a wooden hard liquor character volleying with the sweetness followed by a moderate, lingering bitterness. Very nice beer indeed.
