COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful fruity nose. We set aside a portion of the batch to age in bourbon barrels to allow the stouts chocolate and caramel flavors to marry with the woods natural vanilla and toastiness. The final blend pairs well with both savory dishes and your favorite desserts.

Bottle at ChrisO Holiday Tasting, London - thanks to The Peterís mother-in-law (Myrna?). Pours dark brown with a fine, tan cream head. Dark bread malt nose, hints of Belgian candi sugar, dry cocoa. Medium to strong sweet flavor, some light dry cocoa, candi sugar, rich toast, light smoke, roasted malts. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with moderate earthy bitterness, dry cocoa, toasty sugars, brown sugar, rich dark bread. Very tasty, nice bitterness offsets the dark sugars. Great balance overall. I loves the Smuttynose.

Draft at Monks Cafe. Opaque pour with a foamy tan head that left some runny lace. Black caramel ash. Coffee grounds. Cigarettes. Brazil nuts. Unsweetened chocolate. Bourbon barrel tannins. Medium full palate. Feels oddly juicy towards the end after such dark dry opening notes.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 01/03/2013. Deep dark brown color with a minimal tan head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing. Aroma of coffee and fruit. Medium body with flavors of chocolate malt, coffee and berries. The finish is roasty with a short malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

22 oz bottle $5.99, Andersons Columbus. Very dark brown, nearly opaque; fizzy tan head dissipates very quickly into a thin ring. Aroma sweet, vinous, prune-raisin, earthy, light bubble gum, light coffee and chocolate; nice. Flavor lightly coffee and roast with clear Belgian notes--banana, bubble gum, dark fruit; tad bit of vanilla and I suspect oak. Mouthfeel is viscous and oily, yet not quite thick; light carbonation is smooth and verges on silky. This is a pretty cool brew.

Aurelius (4654) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JAN 4, 2013
Candi-sweet, vaporous, pruney roast aroma. 22oz bomber, opaque black-brown beer with an oily pour. The label appears to be an engraving of Brandon Flowersí Belgian granddad wearing his Killers outfit with the bird wings. I found this to have an unpleasant roast bitterness and too much coffee acidity. Medium to slightly heavy body. Clingy bitter finish. Market Square Liquors.

Bottle. Drank this bomber about a week ago. It drank purty good. I was playing words with friends at the time so I didn't really pay attention to the distinct complexities. Nuf said. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

JMerritt (1890) - Macomb, Illinois, USA - JAN 3, 2013
Dark chocolate brown with a thin, bubbly light-brown head. Nose has fruity overtones (figs, raisins) atop brown sugar, molasses, light char, graham cracker pie crust and caramel candies. Flavor has a surprisingly strong bittersweet cocoa flavor up front with some lightly astringent burnt coffee. Alcohol is noticeable in the middle and finish. As it warms a bit, I can pick up some toasted grains and light oak notes amongst the rich dark malts - grilled banana starts popping up in the nose as well. Overall, I found this leaned a bit too much towards the harsh, burnt cocoa and heavy roast that - by itself - isnít necessarily bad, but doesnít seem to mesh well with the Belgian yeast. Share with a few friends on some cold winter night - a bomber was a bit too much (flavor-wise) for me, personally.

22 ounce bottle - $5.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Bottle Conditioned in 2012.

Appearance: Pours a black body with a tall, churning, tan head thatís steadily, slowly flattens out. A few stray dots of lace.

Smell: Initial sniffs revealing well-roasted malt, charred breadcrusts, and bitter chocolate. A vinous presence, noted notes of ripe banana, spice, and, upon warming, even some half-chewed bubblegum. Incredibly subdued barrel-aging quality in the nose, which could be easily missed, if not specifically mentioned on the bottleís label.

Taste: Roasty, toasty, and chocolaty, but not quite as hard or bitter as Iíd anticipated from the nose. Dark fruits leaning towards plums, also a fair amount of banana. Light spicing. Growing chocolaty tone, along with the barrel character, which Iíll assume was only a small portion, as itís fairly subtle. Some bitterness, some alcoholic warmth. Chocolaty, spicy, fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Itís not exactly thin, but itís not the thickest brew around.

Overall: While not loved, it was well-liked.

Theydon_Bois (12726) - Tourist Town (West), Berkshire, ENGLAND - JAN 1, 2013
Bottle at ChrisO tasting, thanks to Peter and his mother in law Myrna, 30/12/12. Hazed dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge. Nose carries dark malts, dark fruits, wood, spice, booze. Taste comprises dark malt, bread, rye, spice, wood notes, dark fruits and sugars. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a bitter dry finish. Decent.
