Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful, fruity nose.
This relatively new sub-style combines Belgian, American and English influences to create a beer whose total is more than equal to the sum of its parts. Here’s how Zinneke breaks down and adds back up. Start with a strong stout. This is the Big Beer Series after all… then “Belgianize” it by altering the grain bill and fermenting the wort with a Trappist yeast strain. We backed off the heavy caramel and roasted malts to create a more complimentary flavor profile for the yeast, which contributes fruity esters and a light body. These parts combine to create a beer with dark color and light body with prevalent flavors of dark fruits, vanilla and toffee, while subtle chocolate flavors appear in the finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head. Has a fruity malty spicy dark dark fruit aroma with weak yeasty hints. Sweetish roasted malty spicy caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a roasted malty spicy dark fruit and caramel finish.

Bottle at ChrisO Holiday Tasting, London - thanks to The Peter’s mother-in-law (Myrna?). Pours dark brown with a fine, tan cream head. Dark bread malt nose, hints of Belgian candi sugar, dry cocoa. Medium to strong sweet flavor, some light dry cocoa, candi sugar, rich toast, light smoke, roasted malts. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with moderate earthy bitterness, dry cocoa, toasty sugars, brown sugar, rich dark bread. Very tasty, nice bitterness offsets the dark sugars. Great balance overall. I loves the Smuttynose.

Bottle at ChrisO tasting, thanks to Peter and his mother in law Myrna, 30/12/12. Hazed dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge. Nose carries dark malts, dark fruits, wood, spice, booze. Taste comprises dark malt, bread, rye, spice, wood notes, dark fruits and sugars. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a bitter dry finish. Decent.

Bottle @ Richard’s tasting. Black pour with a tan head. Spicy vanilla notes, some bourbon, and cocoa powder. Roasted malt, nutmeg, and black cherry. Flavor is nicely sweet. Vanilla, black cherry, and bourbon. Roasted malt, cocoa powder, and a nice spiced finish.
