COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful fruity nose. We set aside a portion of the batch to age in bourbon barrels to allow the stouts chocolate and caramel flavors to marry with the woods natural vanilla and toastiness. The final blend pairs well with both savory dishes and your favorite desserts.

An dense black body with a tan head that had solid retention and good lace. Aroma was a mix of roasted malts. Dark cocoa and alcohol. Mild oak. Initial flavor was slightly roasted but mostly sweet. Mild hints of bourbon. Some oak. Alcohol was a nice warming presence. Could not distinguish any Belgian yeast. Nice body and mouth feel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sample from 65 cl. bottle. Near black with an amber tint. Thin, lightly tanned head. Roasted aroma with sweet fruits, coffee, chocolate, caramel malts and vanilla. Taste is lightly bitter. Medium to full body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes dry and roasted with vanilla and sweet fruits. Lovely Stout.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours a clear, dark brown with an orange hue and a creamy, light brown head. Sweet, vanillaish roast up front in the aroma, but not overly affected by the barrel aging. Rich, sweet chocolatey body, subtle vanilla roast and again only very discreet impact of the Bourbon barrels. Pleasant, but i did expect a little more from a barrel aged Stout. 081114

From Rays in Tosa, cellar aged 3 months. Pours black with a tannish head, some streaky lace. Aroma consists of caramel, roast, some licorice and bakers chocolate. The chocolate comes through stronger down thru the glass. Taste is of bakers chocolate, sweet caramel, light roast and some tangy spices. Maybe would be better at colder than cellar temp. Medium to full bodied. Finishes bitter and sweet, slightly more to the bitter side. Enjoyable, without super depth or complexity. 14.8

22 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market (bottled in 2012). Very dark brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of rich roasted malts, light chocolate, and a hint of bourbon. The taste offers up much more of the bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark chocolate, caramel, and nuts. The carbonation lifts the heavy flavors from the palate so the lingering bitterness is lessened. Nice beer!

This looks to be my last Smuttynose until I ever get the chance to get back to this wonderful brewery. Reviewed from notes, this one was poured into a tulip and a snifter there weren’t any significant changes between the two. The appearance was a nice dark brown close to black color with a decent one and a half finger white foamy head that dissipated at a decent pace. The lacing left in the wake was sticky and somewhat thick. The smell had Belgian spices up front with a decent fruitiness running underneath. It seemed to have leaned towards a light plum and raisins with some light apricots even thrown in there. After a bit of warming, a sweet booziness starts to appear (bourbon - I guess) along with some light chocolate, caramel and vanilla. The taste took all of those flavors and combined them to add a decent woodiness about it. On the palate, this one sat about a medium in body with a fairly decent sessionable aspect about it. The carbonation seemed right on for a big Belgian stout. Overall, this was a pretty good Belgian stout to me. In fact, I once had it with an Easter dinner and that was an absolutely awesome meal.

Poured from a 2012 bottle into a snifter. Aroma is light chocolate and bourbon notes. Appearance is a dark brown almost like old engine oil with a small light tan head. Taste is dark chocolate some vanilla and bourbon. Palate is good with a nice level of carbonation. Overall a good brew.
