10/23/2007 9:07:29 PM On tap at Arendsnest. Malty. Dark brown colour. Quite strong taste of coriander or basil leaves. But barkeep swears the dominant flavour here is roasted malts. Tastes of chocolate and coffee also pronounced. Enjoyable.

From a 75 cl bottle bought at the Deen supermarket in Lelystad. Lot of pressure upon opening, but no gusher. Very thick and frothy, thickly lacing, whipped cream-like, dense and stable head sitting atop a rusty burgundy, deep brown beer, clear and translucent. Aroma of hazelnuts, toasted brown bread, caramel, soap, dried banana, blue plums, black pepper, dried orange peel, jute, caramelized sugar, dry autumn leaves, butterscotch, clove-like phenols, brown rum, liquorice candy. Fruity onset, raisin, fig, overripe plum countered by redcurrant sourishness but sweetness prevails, softish carbo, thick and ’fluffy’, supple body consisting of very caramelly, lightly bitterly toasted and somewhat bready, full malt sweetness, spicy notes here and there, ending with sweet, soft and rich, toasted and caramel maltiness with a dash of leafy, earthy hop bitterness not lasting long (as expected from the style), along with a light bready yeasty touch and a glow of warming, brown rum-like alcohol. Convincing as a ’dunkler Doppelbock’, perhaps a tad too hoppy in the end, but this feature only adds complexity; body is thick and soft enough to feel almost quadrupel-like too. This beer can withstand comparison with some of the German classics (Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel and the like). Classic in terms of style and overall profile, but if you like your beers big and malty, this is surely recommendable.

Thuis geschonken uit de grote fles. Donkerbruinrood bier met flinke schuimkraag. Geur en smaak van mout, hop en caramel. De nasmaak is lekker grassig hoppig. Lekkere doppelbock, maar toch iets te dun van body.

Bottle at home. Aroma of dark bready malt, nuts, raisins, hint of chocolate, some liuorice, some coffee. Flavour is medium sweet with a light bitter finish. Body is medium. A fine, well-balanced Doppelbock.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2015 (12/13/2014) On tap at Asgard. Reddish Brown with an offwhite head. Sweet aroma of caramel, malts, almost maple syrup like. Taste is sweet, malty, light bitter, sweet malty aftertaste. Not bad. 7/3/7/3/15 (10/30/2015) on tap at Uiltje bar, Haarlem 2015 next to 2010 vintage. Pours reddish brown, big head on 2015, slightly darker 2010 with almost no head. Almost bourbon like aroma of the 2010. Smells great. Taste is still a bit thin. Vintage 2010 wins, but still not great in taste. 8/3/7/3/14

Dark brown with beige head. Aroma is sweet candy. Taste less sweet as expected due to the hoppy overtone.

Robijnrood troebel bier met volle kraag. Aroma is hopjes, laurier en cacao. Smaak begint zoet en daarna zuur bitter. Erg lekkere bok.

Drank with Rik and Lennart in Samson 28-11-2014. A fine bok. All the fine hints are there. Liked it.

Redbrown beer with a off-white head and medium carbonation. Some dark fruits, malts and some syrup-like sugar sweetness. Really well drinkable for these heavy tastes.

Tap @ Arendsnest, Amsterdam. Pours a dark auburn reddish brown with a beautiful looking, yellowish-brown head. Really nice looking beer. Aroma is a lot of caramel, dark fruit, dried and otherwise. Taste is a lot of dark, malty bread, dark syrup, molasses, dates, raisins, prunes. Surprisingly light with rather strong carbonation. A malt bomb, but a good one.
