Bottle, bought @ Utobeer market stand, London.
Lightly hazy deep red with a fine, creamy off-white head on top. Fizzes away rather fast, but looks good while it’s there. Aroma is thick wet malts, some cascade hoppiness, light toffee, quite vinious and rather dusky. Low carbonation, rather creamy. Flavour is earthy, light hopped, rather sweet and vinious. Aftertaste has a good toffee caramel note. And stays for quite some time.

On Tap at Arendsnest with Bierkoning. Pours a nice deep woody amber with a lasting off white head. Aroma is very soapy with some solvent aromas, cascade hops with some catpiss and yeast. Flavor is earth, dirt, more cascade hops, big thick sweet caramel malts with phenolicy spicy yeast and some cleaner, and oil in the finish. I get a wierd clash between phenols and metallicy off hops that I used to get in my homebrews which throws me off. Meh.

Bottled. A slightly hazy mahogany coloured beer with no head. The aroma is pretty heady. Alcohol certainly noted, together with fruit and sweet malts. Pretty yeasty tasting. A little rubbery dry. Fruits. Not an English or American barley wine, but very Belgian. A bit hot. Decent enough but lacking nuances.

330ml bottle (Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam)
Rich brown, small self-supporting head. Beautiful potent hoppy aroma - fruits including peach and grapefruit. However, it’s not thin on the malts either. Pleasantly carbonated, and tangily hoppy while in the mouth. Excellent burnt malts, nutty, liquorice, both noble and new-world hops. Tangy, clearly hoppy, bitter finish, spicy, even some ginger. Almost no hint of 9.8%. Quite excellent brew.

Ruby brown, beige lacing head. Nose is caramel malts and american hops. Quite sweet & spicy. Flavor intense hoppy liquorice, malts, some grapefruit. Bitter finish with sweet liquorice. Medium to full bodied, quite smooth palate. Nicely hoppy and malty barley wine.

Thanks austone! Dark nut/ruby brown color, small steady off-white head. American hoppy nose with hints of licorice. Licorice is dominating flavor but there is hints of iron. Some hops, medium to full bodied. Beer for ageing. Not really complex but ok beer for slow drinking.

It’s a hazy dark orange colored beer. It has a solidly beige head. It stays for a long time. Aromas of fruit, very hop bitter and touches of caramel. The taste goes from soft to bitter. Also a nice tintillating, a little dry taste in the back. Taste stays for a long time. A very good Dutch beer in an American style.

UPDATED: DEC 9, 2009 Bottle, 9.8%. Nice sweet hoppiness, soft fruits. Dark cloudy red/orange colour. Small head. The flavour is sweet and very hoppy, American style. Sweetish, fruity hops, getting a little sourish from the overload of hops. Warming alcohol finish. Good mouthfeel. Quite good flavour, but could have a little less alcohol. Like a double IPA. 8 3 8 4 17

Bottle, 9.8%. Sweet apricot aroma, some dried fruit. Cloudy dark orange colour. The flavour is very malty, with some dried fruit. Distinct bitterness. 7 3 7 3 16

A unique barkeywine, with the aroma akin to an English old ale, with citrus from Cascade hops, yet only moderately hoppy. An expirey date of December 15 2007 yet no matter. Pours grapefruity with lots of hanging lace. A medium to full mouthfeel, very smooth. A complexity of mild tastes: caramel, grapefruit of course, tropical fruit, sugar, yeast. One of the best barleywines I have tasted. Alcohol hits the nose, and is warming. Thank you Absumaster.
