Inspired by the Belgian sour ales of West Flanders, Le Serpent has a distinct sharp acidity & complexity. This beer is brewed only once a year and aged in French oak barrels. A mixed culture of “wild” organisms are used in fermentation making each batch truly unique.

From notes. Tasted on 9/16/12 from a capped 750mL bottle that I received in a trade with Bill Becker aka bitterbill a long time ago. Pours cloudy cola brown with a red tint, and a thin beige head that leaves very thin lace. The nose is very sour citrus and tart cherry with nice dark bread malt, and just a touch of cinnamon spice. The flavor is a very balanced combination of sour citrus, bread malt, cherry, and nice vanilla and cinnamon oak. The body is medium and very tannic with average carbonation and a long sour, malty, cherry, and oaky finish. Although not much to look at in the glass, this is one of the best tasting beers I have ever had.

Bottle shared at Ryan’s tasting for Vinny’s departure. Pours a clear amber orange body with nice head and light lacing. Aroma is sour tart fruit, lactic character and soft oak. Mouthfeel is nice and tart with sour fruit, oak, sour grapes and light acid. Nice.

Bottle shared at tasting, poured clearish orange-red shade with medium head. Aromas and flavor are oak, sour fruit, lactic acids, and some caramel bread. As it warms, the rich grapes come out. Nice but maybe a bit too sharp/acidic.

Capped 750 from the brewpub. Pours brown/ruddy wt a transient beige head. Aroma hints at sour. Med body minus. Flavor is lightly sour, very lightly, with some fruit. Finishes dry with some woody notes. Tastes good.

Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours orange amber with a modest off-white head and a fruity aroma. There is a mildly sour caramel malt flavor with a dry oak finish. Not much like a Flemish sour, yet a pretty tasty brew.

Bottle, 2010 vintage, bottle #53, thanks to JohnGalt1. A couple years ago BuckeyeBoy tried to get me to the release party; I was bummed to miss out on road trip due to work. Later on down the road Toby sends a bottle I thought I’d never see... many thanks. Nose is fruity and acidic, lightly woody, but mainly tart. Amber with an auburn hue, yields little head on the initial pour. Nose deep in my goblet the aroma is rich and potent. The taste is mellower than the aroma would suggest, but overall a nice blend of fruit, acidity, and wood. Lightly tart, the sour cherry really comes through well and balances with the wood. I like the way the flavors mesh, it suits the style and is not over the top crazy.

Bottle… Tower of Power Sour Hour 2011This beer rocks!… Pours a clear burnt orange with a small, white head. The aroma is fruity, tart and funky with sour cherries and purple grapes really standing out. Medium-bodied and lightly creamy with soft carbonation. The flavor is sour and fruity with a nice caramel backbone. Puckering finish with a mild, lingering, yeasty bitterness. Big-time thanks to the ever-generous Dstructo for popping the top on this one!

Pours cloudy caramel. Nose is full of sour cherry, as is the palate. Very, very sour cherry. Not quite great, a little too simple.

Bottle provided by destructo at his TOSPH. Clear light brown pour. Cherry and oak aromas. An outstanding example of a Flanders’ Red with sour cherry notes. Awesome, thanks Ryan.....
