Serving: from tap at Snipes Mountain Microbrewery and Restaurant Aroma: none detected. Appearance: average-sized, creamy, off-white, initial head with good lacing and mostly diminishing longevity. Clear, dark-amber body. Taste: moderate caramel malt, lightly sweet initial flavor and finish with average duration. Palate: medium body with oily texture and soft carbonation. Overall: very good. Unique taste.

Not sure if this is the right beer. On tap as a special bitter at the brewpub. Pours a nice hazy dark gold color with a thin white head. Aroma is a little malt but has a nice citrus hop kick. Flavor is pleasantly bitter with a nice malt balance. Good beer.

Bronze color with decent head. Donít detect the subtle flavors advertised for the beer in the brewery. A mid-range, but unspectacular IPA/APA straddler that they cal an ESB.

From a bomber.

Pours a cloudy orange-brown with a big robust head. The very nice aroma is dominated by soft fruit (pear and mild grapefruit) and brown sugar malts. The flavor

The flavor is rich and malty, but not overly so, and the fruity hops (hinting at times at an almost barleywine complexity) come in to balance the whole thing out in a very nice way. The beer is not too sweet, not to bitter, with a gentle chalky aftertaste that I find quite pleasant. The mouthfeel seems spot-on for the style.

I like this beer, and it could easily become a session regular for me, especially if available in 12oz form. I can understand why this one is getting more low threes than high threes, but itís hard for me to understand the really low ratings that it is receiving. Perhaps the quality has improved this year? I donít know.

Mahogany with an off-white head. No lacing. Bitter and roasty aromas with hints of caramel. Toasted malt flavors with bitter hops. Slightly fruity. Standard ESB.

Hazy reddish orange. Medium head. Light sweet aroma. Very solid beer....Very balanced with good presence by both hops and malt. Bitter to begin, but mellows quickly. Very nice drinking beer.

This is just a really basic esb, it is quite easy to drink and is not overly tasty as it is not really bad either. Somewhere inbetween, with some caramel maltiness, earthy bitter hops, creamy on the palate, with a harsh dry finish.

28-Dec-05 (22 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with Larry Pitonka, thanks Andrť!) Iím very happy to have a fresh bottle because boy, that first bottle was a total disaster. Popping the cap, there was no "Michael Bay" explosion, and it didnít foam up when pouring the beer. And no soapiness or overripe apples in the flavor. No, instead, this is a healthy beer, and very tasty indeed. Up front, thereís lots of toast, mildly roasty and lightly sweet maltiness and a touch of caramel, with a moderately bitter and slightly citrusy hoppiness kicking in the midpoint that easily balances the ample malt and finishes with dominance. The beer is good out of the fridge, but is still very flavorful and enjoyable at room temperature as well. There is also a slight chalkiness to the flavor and mouthfeel. Body is medium, but shows no signs of thinning in the finish. Carbonation is solid but gentle on the palate. The nose is lightly malty, hoppy and somewhat dusty, but doesnít impress as much as the flavor. Fairly hazy amber body is crowned by an inch of very bubbly, off-white head. Overall, with the assertive malt character and snappy hop bite, itís a west coast ESB through and through. Definitely worth of the effort to get a second bottle.

18-Oct-05 (22 oz bottle: $3.29 at Johnís Marketplace in Portland, OR) We have two problems with this bottle of beer. First is the insane amount of carbonation. This beer is so overcarbonated, I scoop all the light-tan head out of my pint glass, and the head builds right back up again. Itís like the magician pulling the handkerchief out of his pocket. And then my taking a small sip of the beer results in an explosion inside my mouth. The second problem is the intense soapiness of the aroma. This is about as strong a soapiness as I can remember in any beer, and itís almost unbearable. Fortunately, the flavor isnít as bad, perhaps because the malt flavor of this beer is strong enough to overcome the soapiness to some degree. Nevertheless, this really isnít drinkable, and Iíll have to obtain a new bottle if at all possible. (2, 2, 4, 2, 7 = 1.7)

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2005 Bottle: Copper amber, moderate to large off-white head, foamy, fairly nice lacing, a few strong streams of carbonation. † Slight grainy aroma, a bit sweet perhaps, with a touch of diaceytl. † Malty start, earthy, somewhat grainy, but fortunately not as buttery as the nose hinted. † This one is fairly robust for an ESB. † Minor apple skin and hop bitterness at the finish. † Body is quite full, mouthfeel is moderate tho. † Lingering metallics and/or strong earthy notes after the finish. † Could stand to have a cleaner finish. † Overall, not too shabby.
