murrayswine (101), Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jan 18, 2007 Shared to me by Battlekow.
Pours like aguiness, only thinner, so I’ll call it burnt brown/black.
The head is decent, and basic.
the smell is awesome, rich with sweeter malts and a little coffee bitterness, slight toffee. Finishes as raisins.
The taste is a little limp and the mouthfeel is non existant, so I will let it warm up.
Okay it’s warmer, and the taste is a little more forward. It nutty as hell. Limp, and a little underwhelming. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 17, 2007 Black body with a short-lived tan head. Pleasant initial chocolaty roastiness, like burnt toasts with Nutella. Then the fruity flavours take over. Grapes, raisins, plums, etc. Vinous and even a bit sour. Too fruity and vinous for me. An ok beer. Started promising but the train ran out of steam. TPaliga (212), Munster, Indiana, USA Dec 7, 2006 Pours deep brown. Roasted malt aroma. Hints of cocoa. Nice coffee and bitter chocolate flavor. Palate is a bit thin with dry finish. Fightfire4beer (125), Virginia, USA Dec 6, 2006 Tap. brown almost black color with a medium tan head. roasted coffee aroma. coffee, semi sweet chocolate and nut flavor. Very nice experience. A MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Oct 8, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A sheet of foam rests atop the brownish black.
-Potent roastiness emerges from pungent vinosity, for an alluring and unsettling aroma.
-Talkative molasses and boastful roastiness stave off the fruity sourness.
-The soft, large bubbling reminds that of their IPA.
What if you dig deeper?
-Roastiness claims the finish, which was predictable due to its raw strength in this beer.
-A meaty, red wine vinegar tinge gives its personality, but I’m not sure it’s supposed to be there.
-Dark chocolate links the brash roastiness to the molasses’ sweetness.
-As Joris says, this is a severe porter, but it is a pleasure to tame it.
