2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 nate2g (1548) - Boomtown! / Waikato, - JUN 20, 2009Bottle. Pours clear golden with a small white head. Not much in the way of aroma...light malt and grass. The flavour is malt and grassy hops. I think it’s more a pils than pale ale. Low bitterness in the finish.

I found this to be a good pale ale in the American style, although lighter on hops and malt than most west coast pale ales are. Nonetheless a good Aussie version, cetainly better than a lot of the commercial big brewery beers currently on offer.

Out the bottle, into a weissbier glass. Head rises then falls back to a sudsy off-white web that leaves a fine lace. Rings of clingy bubbles set up around the side of the glass. The body and orange amber and not quite bright. Strawberry, honeydew and pears come through on the nose, as does a little orange sherbet. Hops; quite piney, sharp and resinous on first sip, clearly lead the way. Relaxes to show notes of vanilla, rose petals, white bread, the fruit of the aroma late and into the bitter, hop dominated swallow. Body quite light and the mouthfeel relaxed, foamy and relatively smooth in the swallow. Nicely balanced, subtle enough in flavour to be sessionable though strong enough keep it interesting. Quite nice!! (33cL, Brewed on 19/08/09, Dan Murphy’s)
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 ndon (857) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 20, 2010
UPDATED: SEP 1, 2010 not the best australian pale ale by far. has an average malt character with citrus flavours, that alternate between orange and passionfruit
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 ComradeK (732) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - MAY 20, 2010
330ml bottle. Pours clear gold, with a sizeable and lasting head and floating yeast, always a bonus. Reasonably strong hop bitterness to begin with, yet sadly there is not much to back it up. The predominant flavour is a slightly sweet yeastiness. The finish is not great either. A beer that showed a lot of promise, especially considering its impressive stablemate, Razorback Red Ale, but sadly fails to live up to it. Passable, but far from brilliant.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 hawthorne00 (1856) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - APR 16, 2010
UPDATED: APR 19, 2010 Light amber with a small white head. A little caramel and fruit on the nose with just a touch of grass and even less of citrus. Taste is mild and sweet with a little finishing bitterness. OK but pretty bland. [very quick rerate, old score 2.5] It would have paid to read hear before drinking: this is much improved drunk at Australian lager temperatures (as jonno suggests below) . At about 7C it’s quite fruity and the finish is dryish. More a golden ale than an APA.

A strange pale. The nose was originally nice and hoppy. In the mouth it was malty with passionfuit tones, but as it warmed it became less palateable. I would drink this pretty cold like a lager and i think this would go down reasonably well.

Bottle. Clear golden orange with a disappearing white head. Aroma is mainly of caramel and fruity hops with notes of citrus and spice. Flavour is a lot maltier than the aroma but is otherwise very similar: caramel, citrus and spice. Light mouthfeel with fairly high carbonation and a nice dose of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Not a bad beer really but not outstanding in any way either.

Bottle. Nice beer. Aroma is hoppy, with grass. Flavour is long-lasting, with lingering bitterness. Velvety in the palate, and medium-bodied. Dark yellow, with a frothy white head.
