Murky pinkish body with the grim lacing. Tomato funk. I can’t even smell it that much. Herby green tomato. Dank. Gagging. Cooling. Boak.

Can shared at Garvie’s. Pours murky oink with a creamy white head. The nose has nice mellow tomato juice laced with chilli pepper. Medium sweet flavor, spicy, with biscuity lager, cayenne, minced tomato. Light bodied with average carbonation. Salty and spicy on the finish with further weak tomato juice. Not bad.

One of the great joys of travelling is to discover the new and unique ways that other cultures approach beer. For example, in the USA they are afraid of alcohol and serve up a near-beer alternative called "Budweiser". Here in Mexico, their equivalent is Sol, who sells beer to people who don’t actually like beer. Take this clamato concoction for example - this smells like tomato juice soda with a twist of lemon, not exactly revolting however. It has all the effervescence of a tomato juice soda as well, with a foggy brown body and some okay head but it disappears far too quickly. Flavour is clamato to be sure, with juice a vague hint of malt in there. I’d call this clamato soda rather than beer itself. In fact I wonder if there is any beer in this at all, and only give it higher ranks because I don’t mind the occasional clamato now and then.

Sol Clamato has a thin, fizzy, pink head that goes right away, a pink-red, opaque appearance, with strenuous bubble streams, some film on the sides, and no lace. This beer really crackles. Aroma is of tomato juice, lime, and lager beer. Taste is of those elements, with lots of salt and red pepper. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy, and Sol Clamato finishes like a salty and spicy V8 juice. Overall, this is probably the best of the chelada beer style I have so far tried. RJT

Wow, when I found this I had to try it. After reading about the elusive Bud Chelata, this must come close, no? I actually poured the can into a glass to get some aroma, innocent as I was. Well, as expected it’s murky tomato red with fizzy and quickly disappearing head. Aroma? Tomato juice, maybe some spice, no beer aroma. Taste? Cold instant tomato soup with chili powder and forced carbonation. However horrible that may sound, it does not does this beer justice. The acidic heat burn in the back of your throat, the nasty mouth filling fizz and the out of proportion saltiness on the tongue make this by far the worst ’beer’ I’ve had ever. So far... Admittedly I had a good laugh about this beer. Great joke from the producer (the word brewer would be misplaced) of this beverage. Very funny. :- (Can from small convince store in Tulum)

Cerveza extraña, si es que a esto se le puede denominar cerveza.
Aroma a tomates, apio, pimienta y sal.
