Clear bottle 940ml. This is worse than Corona in that it is a poor imitation. No head retention, smells of grain and corn syrup and over carbonated so that the palate is left tasting of soda water. Once again the only way to make this flavour nice is to override it with a slice of citrus. The only beer worse than this the other version of Sol we get in Australia (the 330ml bottle) which is brewed in the Netherlands and it has even less flavour!!!! Amazing.

33cl bottle. Pours clear light golden color.. Low white head quickly fades. Cereal and mostly lemon aromas. Well carbonated. Drinkable in the hot summer days. Nothing special

One of the small pleasures of beer reviewing is trying a beer you were told is horrible and it turns out to be not all that bad. The Mexican-brewed “Sol” by a Heineken-owned conglomerate definitely had one of the worst reputations for macro lagers I can recall. Now that I’ve actually tried it, I’m surprised it’s not actually a bit acclaimed since it’s slightly sweet, not skunky, and very quaffable. That being said, it’s still mild and pretty boring overall.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a tumbler glass. It was bottled on 7/4/15 and cost $1.66 ($0.14 per ounce).

Appearance: Clear shade of amber proper with effervescence visible. Pours to a small, white, foamy head which retains and laces about as well as a macro lager might.

Smell: Typical lager aroma in every way, though there is no distracting or annoying corn or rice smell. Additionally, there is no skunky scent despite the clear bottle (perhaps they use GMO hops?).

Taste: I’ve drank enough macro lagers to discern the difference between the bad ones and the not-so-bad ones. I wouldn’t consider “Sol” to be a truly good lager, but it’s definitely not bad. It just tastes like a generic lager in all aspects. I will say that it’s noticeably sweeter than most and there is no cornwater taste (DMS), though I do detect some apple character and a bit of a tartness on the end. That might be acetaldehyde, though it is subtle compared to some other brands. Nothing in the way of hop bitterness or flavor, but that’s expected. Overall, this is decent for the style and tolerable for a beer in general.

Drinkability: Beers like Sol tend to be a challenge to drink. Either they taste disgusting or they’re overly-fizzy or leave a bad aftertaste. Surprisingly, none of those factors are present here. Though the mouthfeel is thin and crisp, it never feels like water despite the light 4.5% ABV body. Sessionable to be sure, this is the kind of beer I could drink straight from the bottle, though it’d probably be better presented in cans.

RATING: 5/10

12 oz clear bottle.

Pours a golden straw color. Barely a film of head. No lacing. Pretty well carbonated. Eh...

Aroma is nice. Perhaps it’s the carbonation but I smell some decent lemon. I smell lively malt, does that makes sense. The hops are somewhere between grassy and floral. But...it’s not skunked!

Taste is malty and semi sweet. It has slight bitterness. I certainly taste some lemon. It’s not super flavorful, but it doesn’t taste bad.

Mouthfeel is light. It’s crisp and refreshing. Easy drinking. Very sessionable. Finishes slightly dry. Also finishes mildly bitter.

Overall, this is pretty good. I like this lots better than Corona. I wish it had higher ABV, this one is only 4.2%. But it is enjoyable. I would pick this up again.

I had it from the bottle. It’s a clear golden color. The aroma is corn malt. The taste is the same with a mild sweetness. It’s pretty smooth and clean. It’s better than your average macro pale lager. As expected, there’s not much going on.

Pours a pale straw yellow with a thin white head. Aroma is some corn and bread, but the lime that the restaurant put in the bottle distracted from most of the aroma. Flavor is very bland malts. Mouthfeel is highly carbonated. Not very good.

Might be a slight bit smoother than Corona, but definitely your typical mexican lager... Now, where’s the damn chips and salsa?

330ml bottle. Clear pale golden yellow colour with a very weak head. No real aroma to it. Taste is lacking of anything really, a watery and easy drinking beer. Not unpleasant, just very boring. Will take Corona over this any day. 12th November 2014.
