Duplicitous aroma of rich, roasty chocolate and coffee counterbalanced by citric, orange brightness. Full-bodied, creamy mouthfeel with fluffy cocoa alongside roast and citrus coffee notes. Brewed with two Intelligentsia coffees--Ljulu Lipati Zambia for bright, acidic, tart grapefruit notes and French Roast for the darker, deeper coffee elements.

Fantastic brew. Poured from draft at Trellis. Massive cocoa and milky nose. Black with very fluffy brown head. Massive chocolate flavor with a good coffee taste at the end. Marshmallow and milky. Delicious like a milkshake.

Delicious with strong coffee flavor. Sweeter than bitter but enough edge to hit the throat just right. This is up there with the best coffee stouts and is a big step in the right direction for Solemn Oath.

[Tap] Draught at the taproom. Jet black in color. Compact but dense brown head. Heavy coffee and mocha aroma. Taste is of bitter chocolate, blood orange notes, roasted/charred malts and light wooden notes. Oily and coating mouthfeel. Dry, and not as sweet as expected. (That’s a good thing.) Another high quality brew from these guys.

Black with good, creamy, chocolate shake head, wet light lacing / Rich nose of cigar box, roast coffee, citrus, dark fruit / Medium to full body, creamy, acidic, moderately sweet, good fruit and lightly inky, lots of bitterness but excellent balance / Flavors of prune, licorice, molasses, dark roast coffee, grapefruit, semisweet chocolate, grass, lemon / A superb sweet stout.

GI Stout Fest. Pours a dark brown with a light brown head. Big roasted coffee/espresso aroma. Some orange/citrus and dark chocolate. Taste follows the aroma, bitter black coffee is balanced by sweet citrus orange. Dry-ish finish. Medium light body. Very easy drinking.

On tap at The Chicago Beer Festival 2014. Pour is black with a small beige head. Aroma is of roasted coffee, brownies, and earth. Flavor is similar with noticeable citrus qualities - orange peel, caramel, milk chocolate, roast. Great.

Draft at SO, a pretty pour black with creamy tan head. Big coffee nose that’s nice but has a touch of green pepper. Green pepper was stronger in the flavor, lacks some roast to this stout but solid. Nice full mouthfeel.

Sampler Flight Pour on tap at the brewery (Naperville, IL). Pours a deep dark opaque blackish pour. Dark, dreary with a cakey brownish head atop. Dies down to a decent layer overall, decent lacing and stick around. Aromas are significant coffee roast, earth and bakers chocolate. Orange rind, some black malt, toast, and more coffee. Some dryness, more roast, touches of sweeter malt beneath. Initial is rich coffee, luscious and dark, enveloping the palate with cacao nib, dark fruit, touches of citrus. More coffee, cocoa, and rich deep dark flavors. Toast, earth, caramel malt meet a creaminess as we hit the middle. Rich coffee flavor DOES NOT translate to richly bitter or acrid (likely due to the quality of the coffee used). Some caramel, milk chocolate, touches of earth, bitterness, lingering roast and some more dark fruit and citrus, red berry elements are striking for me and probably a display from the depth of the coffee. Backend is creamy, a bit sweet as we taper out. Some decent roast, significant cacao and dryness hit and fruit elements fall behind back here. Rich, a bit silky and decadent at times, the flavor can be intense but overall this really works. Tasty, lovely stuff. Especially for this coffee drinker. This might be really neat in a very unique barrel like Grand Marnier or something. Either way, get out and try this one.
