3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DrnkMcDermott (2621) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - SEP 11, 2012
Sampler at Standard Market. Okay, my review gives this beer a ranking: Black in the rounded sampler glass, a thin yet bubbly ring of foam. Dark chocolate milk nose. Taste has a nice sweetness and noticeable alcohol like a cordial. Also chocolate again, and threads of vanilla. The usual bitter stout malt in the background.

Draft, pours dark brown with small white head. Aroma has a nice hoppy green and piney notes mixing well with raisins and milk chocolate. Flavors of piney hops, orange, dark and milk chocolate, with some plums that finish. Thin body. This comes off more brown ipa to me but it’s good.

64 oz growler from the brewery. Near black pour with a small tan head, lots of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, some piney hops. I get some mild smoke a campfire. Flavor is very hoppy and bitter for a sweet stout. Strong hop presence along with the strong dark chocolate presence from the malts is quite bitter, but nice. Mild brownie and cookie dough notes. Full bodied, nice carbonation. Finishes on a chocolate-orange note.

Jet black color. No head. Chocolate and dark roasted malt on the nose. Light body. Chocolate coffee and slight malt flavor. Clean bitter finish.

draft at Farmhouse Tavern, Chicago. creamy and dense finely-bubbled brown head atop a deep brown body. light smoke, milk / cream. oatmeal and strong toasted grains in the nose with a similar flavor that adds touches of charred wood. silky and carbonation and smooth malt texture provide a wonderfully decadent and fluffy body. as it opens it develops more cocoa / dark chocolate mixed with Belgian yeast esters and phenols (dark plum, black pepper). quite good.

On tap at Bangers & Lace. Pours black with a yellowish brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces. Aroma has a good amount of dark roasted malts with a bit of coffee and a hint of pine hops. Flavor also has a lot of dark roasted malts with some pine hop coming through and just a hint of coffee.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 kseecs16 (1158) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - JUN 11, 2012
Draught from the brewery. I thought this was a bigger beer than it is based upon the rich flavor. I’m a sucker for a sweet stout or milk stout and this is one of the better ones I’ve had. Rich full roastiness on a mildly sweet creamy body. The noticeable hops really put this one over the edge. An amazingly balanced and delicious hoppy stout.

Sampled at the brewery.
Black pour with a beige head. Milk coffee roast all over with some pine hops underneath. Rich coffee chocolate semblance with an enjoyable bitterness. Good stuff. 8/4/8/3/15

Draft on tap at Haymarket (Chicago, IL). Left over from the previous night’s party. With a packed tight weekend, glad to get to try this while I’m doing some rounds on a Friday. Pours a rich near opaque blackish brown hue, dark and more ominous with just a touch of ruby at the base. Fluffy light brown head cakes well, sticks around through the experience, and laces pretty well too. Aromas are cocoa and lactose milk sugars. A touch of cream, gentle coffee roast meets some caramel, black malts, and oatmeal sweetness. Touches of roasty malts, coffee pick up as it warms a bit more with a burst of cocoa, a bit dark but a bit sweeter and creamy at times as well. Ovaltine, milk chocolate, biscuits and a kiss of citrusy and dry hops, kiss of orange. Initial is medium bodied a bit more full offering some cocoa and orange hop play, touches of cocoa, a light creaminess (but nowhere near what was expected), dry bakers chocolate, biscuits, and mellow roasty malts and coffee as we move into the middle. Touches of citrusy hops pick up as it warms, offering a distinct dry mellow orange hopping, dryness works well with the roasty dry malts, touches of pine and florals, moving into just a mellow sweetness into the back. Touches of cocoa, roast, toast, caramel linger on a touch, but the finish leaves the dry and firm American hop profile to the focus, and stays and lingers on the palate with mellow roasty malts, coffee, and bakers chocolate. Dry overall, with touches of girth and mellow sweetness tapering off from the front into the middle and becoming an afterthought into the finish. A lot different than expected as that citrusy hopping really starts dominating halfway through. Nose seems a bit lacking for me, beer might be a touch thin overall, but the hops really add a unique element to the style and I really enjoy the flavors. Pretty nice, touches of cocoa and coffee, roast, and lactose milk sugar dance in and out through the finish and throughout, but overall, the hops win. Body suffers just a touch, could have a touch more girth (but not much) the hops do vindicate it, drying it out pretty well and leaving a firm dry citrusy hopping sticking, but flavors are on and appearance was great. Nice. Really grew on me as I accepted what it was supposed to be.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 LagerLoather (11) - Chicago - Downtown, Illinois, USA - JUN 6, 2012
Aroma has a bit of smokeeness to it. Appearance is black with small brown head. Taste is primarily roast malts i.e. Coffee, chocolate, lactose is on first tasting and disappears after about five or ten seconds. Finish is slightly sweet as you might expect but well balanced. A solid milk stout.
