3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TheAlum (4295) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - DEC 9, 2012
Sampler flight on tap at the brewery (Naperville, IL). Pours a nice brownish nutty hue. Good haze and darkness in the middle, some lighter copper edges and frothy offwhite head sits atop. Laces as a mellow filmy layer, ok lacing. Aromas are brown malts, nut and earth, some touches of soil, biscuits, and toast. Gentle dark fruit, hazenut, as the Belgian yeast gives it that sweeter twang on the nose. A touch of dryness, touch of cocoa and toffee. Some touches of plum, gentle dark fruit intermingles from the Beigna yeast. Initial is medium bodied, a bit dry and nutty, biscuits and touches of dark fruit. Entle earthy cacao, toffee and toast. Medium bodied yet a bit lighter as we move towards the backend. Touches of biscuit, nut, and bready malts. Gentle toast, touches of orange and nutty qualities linger on. Gentle Belgian elements, kisses of dark fruit but not really the dried type hit the palate. Gentle soap, earthy hops, and gentle carmelization and toffee. Touches of citrus hops give some gentle odes into the backend and finish, the malt still dominates the experience. Some grass, dryness, and yeasty elements are firm and into the finish linger on. The flavors are nice but I don’t love the synergy of the whole experience.. Belgian meets Brown Malts. Meh. It’s ok.. But not my thing in the end. A bit sticky on the nose, more manageable flavors, hops try to make their elements known but don’t do enough for me.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 drewbeerme (3649) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 6, 2012
Draft at Haymarket. Pours amber cream white head. Aroma is nutty with some peppery and floral yeast notes. Flavors are tart cherry and nutty malt, mild roast to it, slight cocoa and coffee finish. Yeast profile is really strong, astringent really, sorta muddles the whole thing and adds an odd sourness to it. Med body. Meh.
