UPDATED: AUG 10, 2014 On tap, poured into a stout chalice. The aroma is most notably grainy, yeasty, and caramel with a floral note. It?s a slightly hazy, caramel red color with a fluffy, light tan colored head which retains nicely with a soft surface dustin and leaves a light lacing. The taste is medium sweetness with a medium bitterness. The medium body has a slick texture and a zippy carbonation. The mouth starts with a light citrus, some stone fruit, and a heavy dose of caramel. This turns to a toasted grain, nuts, and rye flavor by mid sip and finishes with a toasted grain, raisin finish. A fairly strong, dry, lingering aftertaste of clean rye follows.

Draft. Pours a reddish amber. Spiced in the flavor and nose. Plenary of clove. Rye in the flavor pretty mesh.

On tap at Revolution brewpub. Taste is nutty, toffee and caramel with a harsh yeasty finish. Decent, but it represents yet another botched American attempt at a difficult Belgian style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Goblet at Revolution Brewpub. Brown leather appearance. Tight bubbles make up a beige colored head that is thin on the brew but leaves a decent coating on parts of the glass. A touch of rye in the nose but otherwise not much fragrance. Taste is slightly roasted malts and. Belgian yeast. Rye spice is saved for the finish. Just ok.

Solemn Oath’s pairing beer at this year’s Chicagoland BPSO. Dispensed to my fest glass showing a hazed amber color, with a decent layer of tan head foam, and wavy lacing. The nose was light spice, malt notes that were light toast & nuts, with a touch of vanilla. Medium bodied, with some earthy bitterness, light creaminess to the mouthfeel, lively carbonation that may have been a bit too fizzy, and dryness to the finish. Paired successfully with the apple-smoked pork loin+.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear deep amber with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice rye and bread note with a bit of backing earthy grain. Flavor has a nice combo of breads and rye with an underlying sweetness.

Draft at Jerry’s. Amber with cream, tan head /Toasty, lightly sour nose of nut, caramel, and tree fruit / Medium body, lightly sour, hint of sweetness but dry, resinous, beautiful balance and bitter finish / Elegant flavors of toast, rye spice, nut, red turning apple, cherry, caramel, resin, and oak / A lovely, complex and understated, sessionable Belgian.

Sampler flight on tap at the brewery (Naperville, IL). Pours a nice brownish nutty hue. Good haze and darkness in the middle, some lighter copper edges and frothy offwhite head sits atop. Laces as a mellow filmy layer, ok lacing. Aromas are brown malts, nut and earth, some touches of soil, biscuits, and toast. Gentle dark fruit, hazenut, as the Belgian yeast gives it that sweeter twang on the nose. A touch of dryness, touch of cocoa and toffee. Some touches of plum, gentle dark fruit intermingles from the Beigna yeast. Initial is medium bodied, a bit dry and nutty, biscuits and touches of dark fruit. Entle earthy cacao, toffee and toast. Medium bodied yet a bit lighter as we move towards the backend. Touches of biscuit, nut, and bready malts. Gentle toast, touches of orange and nutty qualities linger on. Gentle Belgian elements, kisses of dark fruit but not really the dried type hit the palate. Gentle soap, earthy hops, and gentle carmelization and toffee. Touches of citrus hops give some gentle odes into the backend and finish, the malt still dominates the experience. Some grass, dryness, and yeasty elements are firm and into the finish linger on. The flavors are nice but I don’t love the synergy of the whole experience.. Belgian meets Brown Malts. Meh. It’s ok.. But not my thing in the end. A bit sticky on the nose, more manageable flavors, hops try to make their elements known but don’t do enough for me.
