EVER THE PURIST, David approached pear cider cautiously. Often cloyingly sweet, he deemed few worthy of the Sonoma Cider name. So the bar was set at: balance, nuance, intensity or not at all. Contrasting crisp and creamy, aromatic and tart, he added all-natural pear flavors to Sonoma’s distinct small-apple blend until he found something genuine, with real cider integrity.

Pitchfork is our happy ending. It’s an apple connoisseur’s pear cider, hand-crafted with organic apples and a measured infusion of pear essence. It’s both intense and balanced, greeting you with the distinct aromas of both fruits. We’re convinced its fresh play of flavors, crisp start and creamy pear finish will inspire a fan club all its own. With David, the skeptic, presiding. Bottom’s up.

Bomber from Tiffany’s- Not much lacing, but very active carbonation. Pear with faint caramel smell. Taste matches the scent. Tart finish to the faint sweetness. Pretty nice and crisp.

Clean & crisp. Very smooth cider that smells delicious. Boring pour but has a nice mouthfeel to it. Really nice.

Shared from 12oz brown bottle into goblets, it poured a mostly-clear golden colour, some chill haze, no head nor lace. Still predominantly tart apple cider, not nearly enough pear flavour. Too sweet, too fizzy, a bit harsh and metallic. Drinkable but not great.

A nice compliment to a warm summer day. Light in aroma and in flavor. A lovely lemon colored appearance. Refreshing and clean tasting. A bit too carbonated for my palate but still a nice cider to relax with on a hot day.

Apple, circus peanuts, and butter nose. Clear golden. Circus peanuts with an apple finish. Sweetness seems to come from outside the fruit. Medium body, moderate carbonation.

Keg at Bilcos, Napa, 01/02/16. Golden orange with a decent off white cap. Nose is sweet apple, straw, grainy notes. Taste comprises sweet apple pulp, hay, light funk, caramelised sugars. Medium bodied, fairly aggressive spritzy carbonation, drying close. Not good, way too sweet, typical Merican overly sweet cider.

3/9/16. Bottle from the clearance rack at Five Points. I’m glad others noticed this is just an apple cider with pear flavoring and vanilla. Wtf? Golden pour. Fizzy pear candy aroma, sweet apples, light tartness. Weird flavor, apple, cider, pear candy, butter maybe? vanilla, weird offness, astringent, sour. Nah.

Bottle sample at Potomac Gourmet Market. Clear yellow. Aromas of pear and light apple. Tastes of pear, champagne and white wine. Light body with a dry finish.
