Named for a long extinct Russian Cave Bear. Ursus Spelaeus is as deep and dark as the caves it once inhabited. Blends of rich maltiness, notes of chocolate, coffee, toffee & subtle licorice with a perfect balance of hops. The Belgian yeast strain adds touches of fruit, herbs, and spices.

Bomber. Appearance is black with substantial dark brown foam. The aroma is mildly sweet and roasty with a strong emphasis on dark chocolate, caramelized sugar and toffee. The taste starts out with a heavy dose of roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate and black licorice as well as some espresso, vanilla and Kahlua notes lurking in the background. Mouthfeel is creamy with moderate carbonation and a burnt, boozy finish. While the Belgian influence is minimal, it’s still a fairly well-balanced and enjoyable 10% Impy Stout.

09-MAY-2014, draft @Pizzeria Paradiso, Georgetown. Black - actually slightly transparant - with lasting tan head. Aroma is roast, coffee, chocolate, very full taste - almost barrel notes. Taste the same with a touch of smoke. Almost full body with soft carbonation.

650ml bottle. Black pour with thin light brown head. Forceful aroma of molasses, tar and liquorice. Taste follows a similar path, but diverges a little. I start to pick up some notes of coffee and black cherry, plus hops. Perhaps needs a bit more carb. Anyway nice stuff, not sure how it’s Belgian (the label describes a fruity yeast influence that I don’t think is really here) but it has a lot of flavours I appreciate in a big stout.

Lagerboy (1185) - British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 29, 2014
Bomber. 8.5% ABV. Deep dark darkest hueless brown, vanishing mocha foam. Aroma of burnt dark roast, tar, molasses and chocolate. Taste is heavy dark roast, bittersweet dark chocolate, black oily licorice, some coffee bean, spice and yeast. Soft carbonation, full bodied, moderately hopped. Boozy, dark and nasty and: DNFL (Definitely Not For Lagerboys)

Visual: Pours almost inkjet black with a hint of purple-redness in it, pretty much headless, almost no retention, some slow activity near the surface, and the last few drops from the bottle are cloudy. Nose: Huge coffee-toffee-malts, a very clean nose (7/10-pungency) Attack: sour/tangy thick caramel malts, drinks almost flat (not much CO2) Mid-palate: (6/10)-sourness, malty (7/10)-sweetness, (MAIN) caramel malts, coffee Finish: alcohol detection, continual sourness, licorice malt exhale, malty soft coffee-bitter finish. Summary: Every sip is different with this sour-bitter brew; Depending on the bite of the food you’re eating, it heavily leans toward either the oversour or smooth malty sweet. Too much sourness and not enough texture, for me to thoroughly enjoy this.

bottle, pours pitch black, thin tan head, some lacing. nose is a mix of belgian and espresso stout. it’s an odd mix of flavors for me, not really feeling it but it is well exicuted.

Pours an opaque black with no head. Aroma is roasted malt, licorice, spicy Belgian yeast characteristics, chocolate and moderate fruity esters. Flavour is licorice, roasted malt, cocoa, anise, fruity esters, and spicy Belgian yeast. Pretty tasty.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of nice liquorice notes with some light fruity notes which mix well with some light black chocolates notes. Taste is also dominated by some liquorice notes which are well-balanced by some black chocolate notes with some light roasted malt with some light fruity notes also noticeable. Body is semi-full for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed the liquorice notes and the creamy texture of this beer.

Tap at Q-Brick. Shiny black with lace. Nose of blueberries, chocolate, a bit roasty; fruity and phenolic. Rather mild flavor (counldn’t believe it was 10%). Hides its alcohol well, but then again, doesn’t carry a 10% flavor either. Sweet and fruity, and too phenolic for me, with lots of cocoa. Not very imperial.
