2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Fits the regular pale lager mould with no surprises. Mildly sweet, no hop flavour to speak of, nothing nasty at all really. It’s fresh tasting enough and really quite drinkable. The best part about it is that you can win your school fees! Good to see a brewery taking an interest in kids education!

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Quite a surprising package. Nice simple lager with minimal bitterness. This is not a beer to sit and savour, this is simply a nice drink on a hot day to quench the thirst and refresh. No lingering finish - just a clean crisp lager finish.
Definitely at its best when fresh in PNG. Appearance is just what you expect from a mass produced lager - yellow and minimal head - if you were expecting something else you didn’t read the label. But the flavour is nice with no chemical aftertaste - just simple lager beer done reasonably well. Safer than the water too.

From bottle in shaker. Pale golden with lively CO2. There’s a bit of European influence in this lager but it falls a bit short.

Bottle from Dan Murphy’s in Australia, brought to UK by Vinnie. Country #102. Pours a pale gold colour with a thin white head. Sweet malt aroma, sweet taste. Very light body. Medium carbonation. No aftertaste, just a bit too sweet.

I prefer export but if you are in Port Moresby and this is all you can get tuck in and stay inside.

From a bottle. Aroma is not that flash, pours a clear pale yellow with almost no head. Tastes quite bland, is smooth though, I doubt I’ll drink it again.

Momentum is everything for this type of beer. But even in a hot, muggy day, under the traditional ceiling fans, I could not take a second bottle that was offered to me. Grassy, straw and caramel. Bitter, but not nice.

Thanks to my old man for bringing me this random new country tick.
Pour clear light yellow, with no head. Aroma of straw, slight floral, grass. A little bit more fresh than your traditional lager.
The taste is a little sweet upfront, with a bitter lingering finish. Watery body, with a slightly fizzy carbonation. Guess this would be better on a hot summer day.

Poured a light golden amber colour with a thin white bubbly head that retained OK and laced OK. Aroma of sweet malt. Bland sweet taste. Light body. Aroma, taste and palate comparable with other large commercial brewery lagers.

SP Lager, or a brown bottle, stubby or whichever other affectionate name you have for it, is always a good choice. It doesn’t overwhelm, but neither is it boring. It has a light blonde appearance and is not overly carbonated. There are citrusy overtones, there is sweetness but I wouldn’t call it cloying, it could use a bit more hops, but it’s not something that disturbs the overall experience. It reminds me somewhat of red stripe in flavour, although red stripe has a bit more bitterness. It is by no means an "advanced" beer, and people looking for a taste explosion might be underwhelmed. It is however, a beer supremely suited for its location. When you’re sitting in Port Moresby with the sweat pouring, it hits the spot in a way few other beers could manage.
