Sample on tap at the brewpub. Good thin persisting creamy khaki head. Dark color. Good sheets of lace. Nice, rich, sweet light roasty light chocolate milky flavor. Good creamy texture, light body, drinkable. Light sweet, light bitter. Decent porter, without going far out of the box.

Tap at brewery. Pours opaque with a medium, creamy tan head, medium-long retention with good lacing. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, and toast malt, leather and earthy notes. Flavor is chocolate malt, light bitterness, dark fruit (dates, prunes) and a sweet finish. Medium body, low warmth and carbonation.

My least favorite of my sampler. Thin and watery. Not very porter-ish. Bitter chocolate finish. Flat and boring.

THOUGHTS: This was better than the other beers I tried at South Street, but it was still not that great. Very weak for a porter. TECHNICAL: On tap at South Street Brewery. I was black in the glass with red highlights and a small head that completely diminished. The aroma was roasted malt and a little piney hops. The flavor was roasted and coffee malts and a little hoppiness at the end, but still watered down. The light to medium body was watery with soft carbonation and a slight metallic finish.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2008 Served on nitro at the brewpub. Dark brown color with ruby notes. Medium head with great retention. Perpetual even. Leather and coffee notes, Major signs of infection in aroma and taste. 4/4/3/2/7

Rerate: Very, very dark brown with nearly no light coming through. Huge head with good retention and thick sheets of lacing. Slightly tart roasted malt aroma. Almost cheesy. Taste is roasted malts with the same sourness and some cocoa notes. Full bodied. Definitely not as bad as my previous rating, but the sour/tartness does scare me a bit. Not great, but a definite improvement over last time 5/4/5/3/11

Huh. I forgot I had rerated this one, so, well, here is another, this time served on cask. Pours a brownish red color with a creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is slightly roasted malts with some tart almost lactic notes, although this time they seem to belong there. Taste is bitter roasted malts with some not too offputting lactic notes. Medium bodied. 5/4/5/3/11 Exact same as the first rerate. Huh.
