hopdog (4749), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 12, 2007 750ml bottle acquired in trade with EDA (thanks!). Poured a dark brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of earth, yeast, some dark fruits, and cork. Very different aroma profile for a dubbel. Taastes of sour and tart cherries, dark fruits, nutty and light caramel. Ernest (4283), Boulder, Colorado, USA May 26, 2006 Draught, Publick House, Southampton.
Head is mostly diminishing.
Body is medium brown.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (nuts, caramel), with notes of banana, clove, and alcohol.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
It wasn’t quite as great as I’d hoped (based on many of Phil’s Belgian brews), but it was certainly better than the standard tap offerings. JoeMcPhee (3865), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Apr 23, 2006 Light brown, slightly hazy with a thick, which head. Aroma is very fruity and yeasty, apple, banana, peach and some bubble gum all make an appearance. Malts seem a bit muted and understated for the style, light caramel and lots of pale Belgian malt character. Light floral hop flavour is apparent as well. As the beer warms, some more peppery spice comes out along with the light clove and nutmeg that were there all the way through. Heavy on the ripe banana and peachy notes. Fairly refreshing. More of the Dark Belgian Strong but that’s the style police talking. It’s still a pretty tasty pint. BBB63 (3834), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jul 24, 2006 Provided by Pailhead: Coppery hue with a nice frothy head and okay lace. The aroma was a bit chocking with a sour cherry component along with leather, earthy yeast, clove, coriander and biscuit. The taste followed suit with a acidic sourness along with a soft grainy undertone. This beer shows very little dubbel qualities and makes me question the condition of the bottle. Additionally, I found the feel far too thin and fizzy. Will try a re-rate if the opportunity presents itself but for now a major disappointment.
