ukoolaid (572), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA Aug 31, 2007 Bottle. Pours a chestnut brown with a hint of red. Big fluffy off-white head. Aroma is sweet, dried, dark fruit. Very thick, full mouthfeel. Figs, raisins, dark malts. Hides the alcohol extremely well. Tastes great, but it’s a tad one dimensional. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 28, 2007 thanks zeswaft. lighter brown. st. bernardus 12 aroma. tastes sweet and sigusting. actually not so miserable. quads pretty much just blow ass as a rule. Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 25, 2007 Chunky dark copper with an off-white head. aroma is belgian yeast. some esters and alcohol. flavor is pretty sweet. syrupy almost. jimhilt (1664), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Aug 19, 2007 Explodes out of bottle and takes 25 minutes to pour a five+ finger very light tan head that stays forever leaving a good lace. Almost clear amber color. Strong carbonation and heavy bodied. Sweet caramel/raisin nose. Flavor is a balanced sweet fruity/raisin and hops. Caramel finish. High ABV is hidden but it is warming. One of the rare beers that I don’t find anything wrong with it. Pricey (but worth it to try) at $13.00 for a 750ml corked bottle from Tully’s Beer and Wine Wells, ME. crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA Aug 16, 2007 Murky brown pour, huge white head. Aroma of candi sugar, caramel, and perfumy. Big candi sugar sweetness, lots of crystal malts, and belgian spices. Some banana, brown sugar, mollasses, light fruits, some chocolate. Pretty sweet, sugary, and alcohol warmth. Perfumy, apples, cloying sweetness, and more sugar. What a great beer. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 12, 2007 Blah. Did I get a bad bottle? Aroma was pleasant but stale. Caramel and dark fruits. Pour was a flat light brown with no head at all. Taste was uncarbonated...same texture as a Guiness. Flat as water. Hot caramel and dark fruits in the taste, but that’s about it. Strong alcohol burn in the aftertaste. Nothing complex. The lack of any carbonation and the reviews below me tell me this beer is actually carbonated and I had a flat bottle. Must re-rate. blklab2007 (938), Connecticut, USA Aug 10, 2007 Updated: Aug 11, 2009bottle poured a red maroon in color with good lively carbination leaving a frothing head that bubbled from the center like a volcano. smell is sweet fruits, somewhat dry, spices, and yeasts. the flavor is just as good as the smell, there is a lot of flavors going on that meld well. texture is rich, fruits like dates and plums, there are a few spicy flavors from yeasts and some malt backbone that makes it smooth. the carbination is what really brings all the flavors across the tongue, has a somewhat sticky sweet taste as you drink it but not in the aftertaste. as the beer warms many more layers come across the tongue, and for something with 10% abv. this is really something. definitely high up on the list of to try beers.
