Southampton Abbot 12 is our version of a Belgian Abbey-style Dark Ale. This unique style of ale is referred to as "Quadruple" and is brewed by only a few Belgian Trappist breweries. Southampton Abbot 12 is made with imported ingredients and is formulated to allow the beer to age for several years in the bottle.

750 ml bottle pours brown with a tan head. Aroma of malt, yeast and fruit. Taste is slightly sweet, roasted malts and a hint of yeast.

Dark amber / light brown, tan head, moderate coarseness, 3mm fades to frothy film. Aroma is raisins with a touch of happy sappy everygreen and a hint of grapefruit. moderate caramel. grass. Slight pondwater. Aroma is much more fresh than a Trappist (such as the La Trappe Quad that I just had). Body is medium-heavy, moderately syrupy, slightly gritty, moderate-to-moderate-strong carbonation, medium-heavy burn, medium-fine coarseness. Flavor is sweet raisin, some strawberry, prune, fresh grass and herbal weeds/brush, fairly spicy/phenolic (although not as much as some American Belgians.) Overall, a decent American attempt at a quad. It does taste fairly green and has some spiciness that again fails to mask its American origin. Nothing that special. The sweetness actually gets a bit cloying.

Very enjoyable. Hazy brown pour with thick off white head. Aroma is ready and yeasty. Taste follows as a sweet version of the nose.

Bottle acquired in 2013, stamped best before 2017. I drank the same batch about a year ago, and I think it is as good or a little better. Aroma is great, burnt caramel, roasty, dark, boozy. Heavy and sweet, but a bright, fruity sweetness. More caramel, rum, raisins. Itís a little more fizzy feeling than Iíd like for the flavors, but thatís about as critical as I can get.

2010 Bomber - Dark tea colored pour with plenty of head but no retention. Nose is a bomb of dark fruit, figs, dates, and bread. Taste is super smooth with lots of dark fruit as well. A few years has done well for this bottle. One of the better Abt Quads I have had especially from this side of the Atlantic. Well hidden alcohol and a good kick of sweetness.

Sample at the Beer Heads MeetUp bottle share event in October 2014. Pours a hazy light cola brown with an ecru head. Caramel nose. Flavors of butterscotch. Smooth finish. Nice quad.

750 ml bottle poured into a La Trappe chalice. Pours a clear dark brown with a thin velvety head of beige foam. The aroma is a little alcoholic for my liking, but there is some nice ester notes of clove and a bit of anise. The ttaste is softly sweet with some alcohol heat on the back end. Velvety mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation.

750 mL bottle. (2011 vintage.) Hazy copper-brown with a nice, almost-white head. Yeast, bready malt, booze, candi sugar in the nose. Nice, but not particularly distinctive. Yeast, dried fruit, booze, and a nice earthiness in the flavour. A touch of herbs and brown spice. Not too sweet. Booze isnít hot. quite tasty.

Pretty good. It had an aroma of bready malts, burnt sugar and spice. Lighter brown and amber color with a thin head. Lighter palate than most quads with moderate carbonation. Heavy malt flavors followed by burnt sugar with spicy yeast and a tinge of coffee. It blended well and went down easy.

750 mL bottle from Total Wine, Raleigh, NC (Triangle). Brownish-orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of grape, raisin, beet sugars, and sweet plums. Taste is a well-balanced blend of dark fruit, caramel, candi sugars, and Belgian yeast. Moderate alcohol warming but most of it is well-hidden. A very nice interpretation of a quad.
