Commercial Description:
Southampton Abbot 12 is our version of a Belgian Abbey-style Dark Ale. This unique style of ale is referred to as "Quadruple" and is brewed by only a few Belgian Trappist breweries. Southampton Abbot 12 is made with imported ingredients and is formulated to allow the beer to age for several years in the bottle.

Cloudy brown pour with ruby highlights . Aroma of burnt rubber at first but then dates and toffee are noticeable. Flavor of dates, toffee, yeast, the profile is mostly sweet with some bitterness in the finish. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. It’s good but doesn’t come close to the quality of classic ABTs like St. Bernardus.

Bottle #300 pours dark cherry, small milkish off-white head, with mediocre lacing.   Wonderful aroma, both dark and pitted fruit.   Slightly vinous, with woody notes as well.   Forwardly fig/date like, slight alcohol is noticed but is quite acceptable.   Minor whisps of vanilla and caramel mix in.   Finish slightly sweet, slightly tart.   Great flavors, mediocre mouthfeel, but could stand to be a bit more chewy.   Tiz smoother than the St Bernardus version tho.   Thanks goes out to austinpowers for the trade!

Cloudy brown with a medium long-lasting off-white head. Bottle at BCTC 2006. Very malty (high-fiber type of bread), a lot of butterscotch and not-so-great spices (cloves, herbs). Very thin body as far as an Abt is concerned. Moderate alcohol presence. Overall, average for the style. “Abbot pas l’cul des autres Abt”.

750. Thanks, Luiss! Pours dark cloudy copper-amber. Huge sudsy tan head that falls to film and then sticks around. Red apples and lots of spice on the nose, rather cidery, even. Beautifully balanced attack; fruits and spices and caramel and biscuit on the mid-palate. Watery (a bit), and too light on the finish, but otherwise astonishingly good. Could easily have gone a few notches higher for a richer body and deeper finish.

Thanks to Goldtwins for this bottle. Pours a rusty copper color with a tall white head. It has been a while since i’ve had a corked bottle with some good carbonation, there was a moment of panic searching for the glass, but it was just a false alarm, no gusher. Palate comes through sweet, brown sugar and plum, caramel and raisin... wait, I think a plum is a raisin, aw hell. I really enjoy the sweetness, it builds off the spiciness in the finish. If you were looking for a dry and airy palate this wasn’t it. Smooth and gripping on the palate, letting the layers of flavors do their thing without interruption. Not a brainstorming session of flavors, more the pin you down and listen to what I have to say, and I’ll say, it was rather convincing.

Found this bottle in Brooklyn some time ago. I've noticed that here in NYC, Southampton beers are surprisingly hard to find, given that NYC's presumably Southampton Publick House's largest market. Anyway, it's a big-ass 750ml bottle and it's full of a fairly authentic Quadrupel. Raisiny and sweet, the alcohol is warming, yet never overbearing. Though it's difficult to get more than a thin, beige head off this beer, its body is thick and dark, dark brown. Lots of fruit flavors here - plums, for example. A hint of spice, too. Extremely complex and well-fabricated!

My 11th rate of Abt/Quadrupel. And thats official. Copper color, nice head. Sweet aroma, dark fruit, sugars. Sweet flavors of caramel, dark fruit, brown sugar and alcohol. Sweet and tasty!

Bouteille de 750 ml, avec bouchon de liège, partagée lors d’une dégustation Ratebeer Montréal chez Cathschlag. Arôme: Odeur de caramel et de raisins. Apparence: La couleur est ambrée voilée. Présence d’un mince col mousseux et d’une fine dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de céréales grillées, de caramel et de petits fruits foncés. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture légèrement minérale. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Légère présence d’épices en arrière goût. (Rating #1663)
