I thought it kind of tasted like New Belgium Abbey's "big brother" ... bolder, thicker and sweeter. Some gentle, dark fruit enhancers (fig, dates and raisin). Tongue-drying hops parched the roof of my mouth and left behind a little bitterness. Pleasant beer. TChrome (1303), Bedford, Texas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 27, 2004 Rating #500. Bottled 2003 vintage. Beer pours dark amber with a not very large off white head that diminishes rapidly. Aroma is yeasty with brown sugar and candied fruit. Flavor is pretty rich, but a bit over sweet for my taste. Lots of raisin, too much candy sugar, and just a bit out of balance IMO. Thanks to AustinPowers for the opportunity to try this rare beer. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 30, 2004 750 ml bottle, 2003. Dark root beer/cognac coloration, medium fast-decaying fluffy head. Very grapy/fruity and vinous nose; on the tongue, also grapy, with rum/cognac alcoholic presence, hints of vanilla...the booze is felt, rather than tasted, but there is too much grape juice and syrupiness here. The effort is there, and the quality, but IMHO this is way too young and undevoloped, almost cloying with brown sugar not mixing well with the predominant dark fruits. Next time, I’ll hold onto it for a couple of years. Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA

Taste is earthy, spicy malts, brown sugar. Balanced ethanol. Finish is stronger ethanol. Nice breadiness, hints of esters. Medium body, light oiliness. Yum! radiomgb (2076), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 5, 2008 Cola in colour with a bit of brown, a large lingering off-white coloured head, excellent lacing. The aroma is malty, quite sweet, rich with a bit of noticable alcohol, lots of dark fruits. The flavour is of candy sugar, lots of malt, again quite sweet, smooth, creamy, light alcohol. Very sweet mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes long, sweet, malty.
Highly sweet but it didn’t seem to take anything away from what the beer was offering. Nowhere near the amount of alcohol that I was expecting. This one would age very well.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 2, 2004 Bottled: Unclear brownish coloured. Beige thin head. Fruit, light alcahol notes and an immense sweetness in the aroma. Almonds, syrup and fruits in the flavour. Some spices is there, and the alcahol is pretty well hidden. Ends on a sweet note. Not that complex, but still quite good. TheBeerGod (3177), Newport News, Virginia, USA

There’s a moderate carbonation feel that makes itself present after several samples. Ends with more dark fruits, caramel, hint of brown sugar, cocoa, and light alcohol.
