Generous share at HF harvest fest. Dark red pour with spotty white head. Deep raspberry aroma and flavor, very tart, nice acidity, not particularly funky or lambic-like in character but very refreshing and pleasant. Good.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter.
Black Raspberry Lambic pours a hazy raspberry purple color with a bright cranberry color head that fizzes up before relaxing into a thin film over the top of the beer.
The aroma is bursting with bright, fresh raspberries. Just enough acidity enters my nose so I know that this will be sour, but it is not overpowering.
The flavor also has a robust raspberry presence. At first there is a gentle sweetness that turns sour, presenting the full range of raspberry flavors to the consumer. Toward the end there is a soft grape and tannic oak presence that blends into the finish.
For a lambic, this has the body that I would expect. The carbonation is a bit fuller than medium and is a bit undisciplined. The bubbles fizz and pop without providing a truly crisp or creamy presence. There is an obvious tartness associated with the fruit, but the beer is not overly acidic.
To compete with the other sour raspberry beers that are produced, Southampton has to have a strong confidence in their sour program, and I have to say I am impressed.

Bottle sampled at Muckfest III. Clear red/purple pour with a thin pink head. Aroma of blackberries and funky sourness. Lots of blackberry in the flavor along with some malt before a puckering sour finish.

Deep red, almost purple, in color with a pinkish head. Heavy on the raspberry aroma and a nice blackberry character, too. Pleasant lactic acidity and tartness, a bit of red wine, and wood. Not too much in the way of funk. Excellent fruit flavor with the blackberry and rapsberry, a nice sourness to it, though not overly acidic. Fairly sweet from all the fruit, but a well done beer.

Bottle shared at MuckFest 3 - Saturday Edition. Pours a richer ruby red copper pour, touches of brown, richer haze with orange glowing edges and bottom. A frothy whitish head atop rings, dies to a small layer, laces small. Aromas are richer berry tannins, blackberry skins, tart fruit and seedy elements. Sour lactic presence, touches of brett, mellow bready and biscuity malts. Richer fruity blackberries, lemons, gentle raspberries. Initial lighter end of medium bodied. Rich fruity blackberry and raspberry element, seedy and sour, fruity with touches of jam, mellow sourness grows to a berry lemonade presence, blackberries, lactic acid. Middle is a touch sweeter, but still berry dominant, sour and lactic, touches of yogurt, richer fruit, berry tannins, and lactic elements, lemonade. Touches of brett but this sour is fairly fruit driven. Gentle dust, funk, lactic and sour black raspberry win the game though. I’d say it’s simple but quite good. Not acedic, richer sour fruit that I could drink a lot of.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 JAXSON (484) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 6, 2012
Pours a deep purple burgundy with a small soft pink head. Nose is nice seedy raspberry, soft vanilla, very pleasant. Mouth is fruit forward, seedy raspberries, tart on the front and drying out over the palate. Some soft vanilla carries through but it’s very dry and seedy. Minimally acidic, very soft profile, but very real, seedy, fresh fruit without any off flavors. This is very nice stuff.
