Pours a Clear amber with a white head. Aromas of very light hops, watery caramel. Taste is slightly bitter, followed by some toffee and caramel sweetness. Not impressed at all. New York is fail so far tonight.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a lasting creamy ivory head. Aromas of carmel, earthiness, spicy hops and light grapefruit. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, earthiness and a hint of grapefruit with a smooth dry lightly bitter finish.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a goblet. There was no freshness date whatsoever.

Appearance: Hazy complexion of rusty orange/light brown. Forms a good sized, white, frothy head which laces and retains well.

Smell: Rather sweet and malty for the style. Yellow lollipops, some caramel and a hint of stone fruit.

Taste: I’m not sure why American breweries make English-style beers when their target audience wants American-style beers. There are a few other of these beers on the market and many are superior to Southampton Burton IPA. This definitely has that classic British character of light confectionery notes of caramel, toffee and a hint of honey. There’s a burst of hop bitterness at the apex of the swig that’s noticeably sharp, but it fades away as quickly as it appears. I notice some apricot or peach-like flavors on the aftertaste, which are nice, but muted. I also detect a twang or sourness which I’d attribute to this likely being an old bottle. It’s a fine palette overall, but nothing particularly impressive.

Drinkability: A medium body all around. Mouthfeel isn’t too thick, but is far from thin. A good level of carbonation to give it some energy across the tongue. Slightly dry aftertaste, but it’s easily tolerable. At only 6.5% ABV it seems rather inefficient and under attenuated.

Bottle from the Piggly Wiggly, North Charleston. Time was, you could score some Southampton brews in NC. Since that’s no longer the case, thought I’d snap this up in my mixed six. Fairly opaque orange pour, with a medium creamy head. Nose of substantial malts, dry and tealike hops, and just a scootch of sugared fruit. Some age on it is detectable in the taste, but that’s less harm to English style IPAs than to Cali hop bombs. Still some traces of fruit and bitterness, and it’s a satisfying, unassuming entry.

Aroma is fruit, malts and very slightly perfumed. The flavor is citrus, malts, mineral water qualities and a mildly nutty/tart finish.

bottle in NY. didn’t pour so no idea of appearance. must say though, aroma and taste were pretty disappointing. tasted more like a lager than an IPA.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Virginia Beach, VA. Dark orange pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of light citrus, pine, and caramel. Good hop bitterness of grapefruit rind, wet grass, and pine needles that is balanced with a good amount of caramel malt. Important to note that this is a British-style IPA and I think a very good example of one.

Burnished golden color with a frothy off white head. Light malty nose with some earthy hops. This lives up to the English IPA label. The US sure has mutated this style. Malty sweetness with some chalk and toast with a strong hop pellet bitterness.
