fiulijn (5880), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Jan 11, 2007 Draught at Hop Devil, NYC Dark color, big head. Good and powerful Stout, essentially roasted malt, but also enough caramel, good body, smooth enough. Powerful final, where some hop reveals itself behind the roasted malt. Rastacouere (5409), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Feb 17, 2008 Very fizzy-looking, coke coloured and feeding a cola-like head, active and unlasting. Quite roasty nose, though not taking any chocolate or coffee costumes: straight up burnt toast. As a result, it does not feel very complex. It certainly has little to do with foreign stouts. It is very dry on the palate. As a result, it is quite drinkable. SImple, but clean, fresh and well done. Perhaps a tiny touch of cocoa can be felt, but really, this is straight up dry roastiness and subtle hoppiness. I was quite surprised at the body’s leanness. MartinT (4377), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 18, 2007 My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts throughout evolve into toastiness and bitterness, as scant fieldberries roam on by. This is a decent pint, but definitely not as memorable as many other Southampton creations.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is barely a ring of foam to decorate the near blackness.
-The body is lean, but perhaps too much so for my tastes. Carbonation is quite lively as well, so the mouthfeel is not as soothing as most stouts can be.
-Green hoppiness supports the moderate roasty bitterness in the back.
-This lacked dark chocolate sweetness and thus a little residual sugar, at least to my tastes.
On tap at Holy Smoke BBQ, Mahopac, NY. Ernest (4250), Boulder, Colorado, USA May 26, 2006 Draught, Publick House, Southampton.
Head is mostly lasting.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, chocolate), with a note of tar.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation.
The sourness and relatively simple nose kept me from enjoying this one more. JoeMcPhee (3815), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Apr 23, 2006 Tap at the brewpub. Pitch black with a thick brown sticky head. Great strong roasty nose over toasted malt notes and a hint of fruit underneath it all. Flavour is well-balanced and surprisingly refreshing. Strong roasted grain with a long charry finish. The roast and acidity really dry it out. Not a complicated beer, but a good one.
