UPDATED: MAY 19, 2005 Pours dark brown, with a tan head. Aromas of malt (slightly roasted), chocolate, smoke, and caramel. Flavors are strong caramel, smoke, roasted malt, and some chocolate. Body should be heavier for this style. Not bad, but not what I was expecting. Thanks to Probiere for this one.

Bottle XXII reserve,from Julio’s. Good nose,Malty. Raisin,cocoa, caramel, salty, little peat. Clean orangy brown color,small brownish beige head that left a ring mostof the way. Bitter sweet flavors, same as aromas with a bakers chocolate. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel, sweet roastedbitter finish. Nice, the imperial level gives it some rich flavors.Abv shows up in the finish. Litely burns. Nice to see Southampton in Mass.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2005 2005 bottle from Julios. Consumed 5/5/05. Pour is a dark brown, approaching black, but you can still make out some deep magenta tinges on the edges. Greyish-beige head, with light flecks of tan, is only one finger high, but remains for most of the experience. The head has a creamy consistency, with low lacing, as well. Aroma brings in oily roast, moderately dry chocolate malt, notes of salty smoke and plenty of caramel. Low on the vinousness, this one is. Which is fine with me, as an afterthought. Flavor begins with bacon-fat smokiness, moderately sweet, little bit of spice and flawlessly transitions in to a chocolate-roastiness. The flavors are delicious, though my main complaint is the relative lack of complexity here, not counting the smoke. I think the classy smokiness really bails this one out. It’s not too sweet, and has a smooth, even mouthfeel, but nothing really mind-blowing here, or so I thought. Medium-full body, lots of caramel and toffee in this one. But I chose to concentrate on the smoke at the beginning of every sip, and that was more than enough for me.
Rerate. Same vintage, about 4 months old. Horribly peppery carbonation, dry, bready texture, alcohol has begun to show through. Everything tastes more stale than it did 4 months ago. Light signs of oxidation already. This is why filtration is wrong, people!

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2005 tasted at the dark Lord release party.dark brown clear brew.Roasted malts with lots of toffee.Taste isn’t what I would normally expect from a Baltic as it was too much toffee candy like for me.I was hoping for something darker and with more roasted flavor.

Bottled: Pours a deep brown black, coffee like. Notes of caramel apple, dark chocolate, burnt grain, dark fruit, yeasty esters, faintly vinous in the nose. Small pale tan head dissipates to just a ring leaving a small amount lace. I do enjoy this, although I was expecting more considering the high ratings. This doesnt quite compare to the Koffs and other porters produced in the Baltic region. Yet, I couldnt put this down. In fact, I will go buy more tomorrow...hehe. Very drinkable, nicely balanced. Rich roasty malts, dark fruit, plum, fig, cherry, bittersweet chocolate, tar, tobacco, oily medium bodied palate, with a faintly bitter, lingering estery alcohol sweet finish. I do like very much. I am excited to find this in Massachusetts.

Thanks Eyedrinkale for opening this at the FFF DL gathering: Opaque oily appearance topped by a small tan head and some lace. The aroma has notes of roasted and burnt malting, chocolate, caramel apple, plum, and earthy yeast esters. The taste starts with a nice fruity front backed by mocha and smoky undertones. A bit lactic and notes of coffee on the finish. The feel is oily and lush, very smooth and quite drinkable. This is yummy stuff but somehow I expected more, perhaps my hopes were a bit too high. Neverless I enjoyed this and you should too.

It does not smell strong.But is taste are more stonger.At the start the flavor taste nothing but at the end very chocolate.A long palate....

At Tap-NY. Pours a deep brown with healthy tan head. Smell is of roasted malt, chocolate and some nuttiness. Taste is is very smooth with a nice chocolatey bite. Very nice!

Found this in NY and what a find it was. Pours nearly black with a thick and long lasting white head. Aroma is so seductive becase the sensations are hidden so well. Wine is the dominant factor along with burnt coffee, toast, caramel and chocolate. Taste has a fantastic white wine feel to it which I love. Flavors get better as it goes down. One of the best Porters I’ve ever had.
