JohnQPublic (79), Brooklyn, New York, USA Apr 15, 2008 Updated: Jul 2, 2008 Draught @ Beer Table. Pours deep brown, with a decent tan head that sticks around a bit. Nose is some chocolate, coffee, a bit of roasty caramel sweetness in there also. Taste is the same -- strong notes of coffee, roasted malt, maybe a hint of dark cocoa, hints of dark fruit. A bit dry overall, with a full body. Beer is supremely smooth and dangerously drinkable. Subtle carbonation, fairly viscous mouthfeel. A delicious and almost dangerously drinkable beer.
Tmoney99 (3414), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 4, 2008 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted malty and dark fruit aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture. Medium dark chocolate bittersweet flavor with medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid complex beer. joekinty (154), rockledge, Florida, USA Jun 29, 2008 dark pour rich creamy head lots of strong chocolate aroma and flavor well balanced k4df4l (133), DTown, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 28, 2008 Aroma: light floral hops with faint aromas of cocoa and alcohol. Appearance: In the glass it looks pitch black but is actually deep brown when held to a strong light source. Tight off-white head that faded quickly to bubbles riming the glass. Flavor: Initially bittersweet chocolate, raisins, coca & dark fruits, yields to caramel/toffee with a slight tangy & grassy finish. Palate is a bit thin but none of the alcohol in the aroma is present outside of the slight warming sensation as you near the bottom of your glass. As the beer warms, the alcohol aroma becomes stronger & the bittersweet chocolate & tangy flavors begin to dominate. Heathen (455), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jun 25, 2008 THOUGHTS: Had this a while ago, before I rated beers. Glad to find it again. Way light than I remembered. A really nice beer, but nowhere near as good as I had thought it was back when I was first getting into drinking quality beer.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark brown, that was nearly black in the glass with lots of red highlights and an average-sized, off-white head that mostly diminished and left slight lacing. The aroma was really nice but weak. There was light to moderate chocolate and mild coffee malt. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and bitter, lightly acidic and sort of sour with and average to short duration. It was nice but also a little weak or watered down. There was coffee, a little chocolate and then sour, bitter coffee and dark chocolate. The light to medium body was oily with lightly tingly carbonation and a light astringent and alcoholic finish. blipp (578), Grand Island, New York, USA Jun 22, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep ruby with a lasting beige head. Aroma is initially hoppy, then fruity, with notes of cocoa powder and bread. Medium and smooth body. Flavor is lightly roasted with caramel and a light note of cocoa powder. Coffe and yeast flavors come out as it warms. Good, but really not that great.
