Pours a viscous looking midnight black in color w/ a 2 finger medium brown head that left heavy, sticky lacing on the glass for days. Aromas of charred malts, burnt brown sugar, dark chocolate, molasses, smokiness, and that unique vanilla marshmallow note. The taste starts off w/ sweet molasses, vanilla , and charred malts up front, leading into peated smokiness, and finishing w/ a good amount of herbal hop bitterness. Full bodied and creamy w/ adequate carbonation. Definately a sipper, but that’s what it was designed for.Overall, fantastic as usual by Phil Markowski. Regrefully, he is no longer the head brewer at Southampton. They should retire this beer.

2010 bottle. Very dark oily brownish black color. Fairly decent head upon pouring, diminishes rather quickly. What I’m enjoying about this one is that it’s subtle in the right places and bold in others. Roasted notes are prominent, full bodied coffee and hazelnut. Hops are gone, but this has been in the cellar for 3 years now. Alcohol burn on the throat at the back end. This is a smooth drinking Imperial.

Bottle 225. Pours deep black. Head leaves runners of used motor oil. Nose is some hops, cherries, chocolate, coffee, raisins, nuts, floral, and smoke. Seems over carbonated and when you swirl it some it comes in the ideal carbonation level. roasty bitterness, smooth chocolate, and very fruity flavors. Rich, smooth.

Cork and caged 750ml. Pours black with thick dark tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and some dark fruits. Flavors of heavily roasted malts, dark fruits, lots of ash, chocolate, and some coffee. Finishes dry with light booze and some sweetness. Beautiful looking beer but fell a little short of my expectations overall.
