Our rich, roasted black ale inspired by the strong stouts exported by Great Britain in the 1800's to the Russian Czar's court.

Editor's Note: ABV changed to 10.5% in 2008 (was previously 9.5%).

Opaque black pour, mocha lacing. Boozy aroma of baker’s chocolate, black coffee, brown sugar, leather, anise, and some smoke. Somewhat syrupy sweetness is quickly replaced with a dry, tannic bitterness. Smooth, a bit oily, and a little thinner in body than expected. Long bitter finish.

Bottle as shown. Pours a motor oil with large tan head that lasts leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is roast, dark fruits, vanilla, and oak. Medium mouthfeel with strong vanilla, oak, roast, chocolate, and dry finish. Good.

Bottle shared at Ma Che, big thanks to Max Daddy - He’s the Daddy for the IP trade! 2012 vintage #29/650. Pitch black with a dirty tan head that thins to a swirl and edgework. Nose is big roast, liqourice, dark chocolate, dark fruits, booze fumes but not over bearing, dark toffee fudge, dark malt. Taste comprises a big roast bite, dark chocolate, liqourice stick, burnt toffee, bitter dark chocolate, pinch of spice, boozey lick, ash. Full bodied, fine carbonation, light booze in a semi cloying closure. Decent impy, the 10.% is well integrated, just falls a little short of a great for me.

Bottle, 2013 vintage, thanks to Ryan, 12/01/2013. Pours black, dense frothy tan head with great retention, sticky lacing left behind. Aroma is earthy chocolate, condensed milk, coffee beans, dark fruity finish. Taste is dark chocolate with sweeter fruity overtones, cherry licorice and hoppy, bitter roast, bit of char with hint of smoke, caramel/fruit notes lingering in the finish. Thick body, rich and chewy. Complex, tasty brew- great RIS.

750 ml bottle served in a Southampton oversized snifter. Big thanks to cosmicevan for throwing the guy my way. Bottle #281/450, 2013 vintage. A: Pours a dark black color with a dark mocha head forming on the pour. Very nice retention as it recedes to a thick head and collar. Sticky lace left down the glass. S: Nice roasted malts, some char and some dark fruit. Creamy, bready malts with some light cocoa and coffee bean notes as well. Some sweet molasses on the back end as well. T: Nice roasted malts with a slight hint of char. Coffee grounds with some dark chocolate. Some sweet boozy notes mixes with some molasses and a little bit of dried bitterness on the finish. M: Medium to heavy bodied with a nice drinkability. Medium carbonation trending towards the lower end of the spectrum. Smooth finish. O: A really nice stout. Lots of char and chocolate with a nice sweetness form the alcohol to cut it. Not the most hidden booze for ~10%, but it doesn’t detract from the overall drinkability of the beer.
